I'm just being literal. A recession is two consecutive quarters of negative economic growth. The recession in the US was from Dec. 2007 through June 2009. There's been positive (albeit generally slow) growth every quarter since, though unemployment is still stubbornly high - particularly for twentysomethings.Schneibster wrote:Ian wrote:Not true, but it may as well be for recent graduates. I should maybe have qualified it, "there's a recession on, on Earth?"

Low interest these days. Maybe time to refinance.pcCoder wrote:I owe loans and got mine consolidated several years ago under one lender. To be honest I think it is worse. I think the interest on the consolidated loans are higher than what the originals were. I don't see how I can ever repay the loans.

Obama proposes to cap student loan repayment.
http://seattletimes.nwsource.com/html/n ... ans27.html
Basically, if you borrow $75,000 to go to college, and you take a job for $25,000, you'll only have to repay about $28,000, lol.
FFS -- just go to a less expensive college, and fucking pay for your own shit.
All this money to college students could be used to feed the hungry and house the homeless. Pay for your own fucking god-damn college! I don't CARE if you go to college! I do care if people are hungry and homeless.
If we have to give grants like this, I'd rather give grants to hard-working waitresses in diners and restaurants around town, rather than college students.
[begin rant] Christ, you choose to go to college. You choose, knowingly, to avail yourself of LOANS which they tell you in big block bold letters that you're going to have to pay the fuck back. And, you proceed on in the face of that knowledge to borrow more money than you can't reasonably afford, and we're going to bail you the fuck out!? Go fucking fuck yourselves!!! [/end rant]

Or alternatively no one borrows anything as there are no fees, anyone who wants to go to university and is clever enough goes and its considered a shared national asset having an educated population that is paid for by taxes

But everybody has a RIGHT to go to college! And nobody should have to pay for it! It's not fair that some people go to Harvard and some people go to Texas A&M! If I want to study Early Minoan Art History you have to pay for it!
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Pay for it out of taxes, and I can think of a lot worst things to fund than Early Minoan Art History ( Late Minoan history for a start)laklak wrote:But everybody has a RIGHT to go to college! Make the colleges back their own student loans.
Let's seem them graduate idiots with nonsense degrees and $100k in debt then.
But seriously, it is access to easy student loan credit that drives up the cost of college. Remember, if only the wealthy could afford college universities would lose 80% of their student body.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

That is one way to do it, but I don't see it as good public policy. College isn't necessary for many folks.MrJonno wrote:Or alternatively no one borrows anything as there are no fees, anyone who wants to go to university and is clever enough goes and its considered a shared national asset having an educated population that is paid for by taxes

And, "clever" isn't required to get into college, not in the US anyway. Borderline morons get into many colleges. Our community colleges accept almost everyone who applies.

Free to the one receiving the benefit of the education. Many of those students - most probably - could afford it - and some of that money could be used to feed the hungry, and house the homeless.FBM wrote:Germany. Free university.

Those students' parents, if not the students themselves, pay the same taxes as everyone else. Not really free to anyone, strictly speaking, but available to members of every economic class. The hungry and homeless have equal access, at least, whether they avail themselves of the opportunity or not.Coito ergo sum wrote:Free to the one receiving the benefit of the education. Why should it be either or? House the homeless and give them free education. There are other places the money can come from.

Re: Obama proposes to cap student loan repayment.
Sorry how many students can afford university?, when I was 18 my total physical assets in the world was probably around £/$100 and even then it could be argued they were my parents and I had a bank account of about £300 which I was say was pretty average. What you are saying is that some parents could afford it no student couldCoito ergo sum wrote:Free to the one receiving the benefit of the education.
