Watch the hilarity that will ensue if the NCSE sends Christian scientists to debunk said canards.

My boss is a PhD chemist and he also fails to make the distinction between abiogenesis and evolution. Smart guy, too. We'll just have to live with the fact that you need to understand some chemistry in order to do decent biology, but there really isn't any need to understand biology in order to do chemistry. There's even less of a connection between biology and physics- as far as physicists needing to understand biology in order to really get their subject matter.
There is no viable alternative to the ToE. Not one. Where we draw the line between the uninformed and apathetic (like my boss) and truly doltish wastes of brain matter is their failure to recognize this fact. Lucky for me, my boss can agree that evolution is the only viable scientific theory which accounts for the diversity of life on Earth and in the fossil record. I'd hate to have to find another PhD I can work with.
Remind me, is there an actual separation between abiogenesis and evolution? what other believable hypotheses do we have about the original apparition of life? (not involving its introduction by extraterrestrials more advanced than us, of course)

Abiogenesis...life initially developing from non-life.
Evolution...existing life forms developing into different life forms over time.
Not same-same. Related in the sense that they're both concerning basic principles of living things, but neither entails the other.

The real distinction is that their study is conducted by entirely different branches of science. One is the remit of organic chemistry, a branch of... chemistry, while the other is the remit of biology. In other words, asking an evolutionary biologist about abiogenesis is like asking an English professor about the square root of minus 1.
