Does this mean that on next guvernatorial elections every atheis, non xtian, and moderate xtian in the state is going to vote dem and hopefully get someone a bit less douchebaggy into office?
Because I don't guess that this will cause such a storm in the Elephant teacup that he will be prevailed on to resign, or at least hand over the nomination come next election, not in Ala.

I don't think Americans are backward - you are after all the most advanced nation on the planet.
