I predict that video games will over take Hollywood in revenue this decade. The scope and quality of the graphics grows exponentially, they're more communal with the advent of the internet and they don't suffer from piracy the same way film and television does.

Actually, the more companies try to protect their games from privacy via DRM/SecuRom, the more severe piracy gets. C&C4 has 'online drm', meaning you can only play it while conntected to the internet. Single player included. If their servers glitch, or you lose connection, you can not play it. Things like Steam and Windows Live are cutting out a lot of the 'install and play' that used to mean you could use a product the moment you bought it. Graphics don't mean anything if you lose gameplay in the process. So many games are nothing but gimmicks now.
A game is considered poor because of 'poor graphics', and yet the best of the Next-gen games I've played have been 'behind the times' in Graphics (Prototype). Not to mention Achievements, I have 18000+ Gamerscore in my 'Live' account, and none of that was deliberate. Used to be a time when performing a feat rewarded you with a bonus, or easter egg, nowdays you get 50 points towards nothing but a tally.
I have spent more time playing the original pokemon games on the original gameboy than I have any Next Gen game, or even all of them combined. The internet has opened online games like Counter-Strike and Left4Dead to 12 year olds Mic Spamming swear words they can't even spell.
The greatest part about playing games like COD are team killing and listen to the little kids swear their asses off at you until their parents come in and yell at them.
Bonus points if they get grounded.

I still play games like Doom, Wolfenstein, Duke Nukem, Half-Life, System Shock, etc.

Games these days are more like movies than games. Achievements are just plain stupid. What kind of bonus is getting five meaningless points for completing the game?

DRM is an absolute abomination. You cannot just install YOUR games and play anymore, and it is not like the pirates are being hindered either. Pirates can easily crack the game to remove the DRM and be on their way. In the end, the only people who are hurt by DRM are the customers who paid their hard earned money for the game.

Another thing that absolutely disgusts me about games these days is online multiplayer. Never mind the players who do not want to (or can not) play online! Online games are always full of squeaky-voiced little boys who feel swearing and yelling at other players is how to be mature. There is always lag (for me). To conclude, a game can be as fun as can be. However, one day the game's popularity will diminish. Then what will happen to the game? It will become worthless.

I will just stick with Doom, from a time when multiplayer was a fun gimmick and single players ruled.
