The link our Alaskan member provided refers to "Britain's Sharia Courts". They are not courts. Neither in name nor in effect. They have no formal legal power to compel anyone to do anything, they won't have any in future.

Not only did I not miss it, but I followed up on the link, watched the mistitled documentary, Secrets of Britain's Sharia Courts, (in two parts) on Youtube, and pointed out to you that those so called courts have absolutely no legal standing. Point being that contrary to what you keep saying*, there is no "Sharia law" in the UK, none in Canada and none in any other western country, and there won't be any.

If you want to argue against blasphemy laws, or laws that protect believers of any religion against feeling offended, I'll be with you all the way. Both those types of laws do exist in Canada, the UK, Australia and other western countries, and in my opinion they should be repealed ASAP. Unfortunately, this won't happen while the Christian boys network control the Zeitgeist, for if one religion loses its privileged status, people might start asking: "Why not all?" Next thing they'll have to pay taxes and report the paedophiles, hebephiles and sundry sexual abusers among their ranks to secular authorities. But that's not what you are arguing, is it? You are arguing that Islamic law is in the books, and there will be more of that happening and speaking of "a place with sharia law, such as Canada". You have yet to provide a single citation of "Sharia law" in Canadian, UK, Australian etc books, and I don't expect you'll be able to find one.

In Canada, it began with an islamophobia law being rejected, then passed. Subtle, but it's probably one of the places we agree isn't optimal.

The sharia law as it is in practice in the UK, is only ever applied to religious matters, and can not have any legal standing.

Since this means the only people who could be abused by it, are devout muslims who value the sharia court over the law of the land, I want you to think about who those folks are. Those are the Brits being oppressed by it, mainly. You are right that you and I will never be subject to them.

Why do you think people were cheering Tommy Robinson in the street the day of his recent adjournment? Do you just think every one of them must be racist? Or have you considered seriously that there might be more going on here? Did you know that he is the first journalist to be jailed in decades? He was locked up in a way that Britains top judge said was no good? There are conflicts between what he says and what is reported about him. I admit it's tough to decide which to believe when the facts don't line up, but it's pretty easy to find lots of bullshit stories about him.

Who honestly supports free speech?

The US has words to that effect in their constating documents, but there is still lots of force used to supress some kinds (libel, for example)

I used to just think that was sensible and necessary, until I questioned it. The only reason we value some messages is because we know that someone just can't go around libeling willy-nilly - there are LAWS.

Anyway, if there weren't laws, there would be LOTS of libeling everywhere, and we couldn't take people at their word.

As it is, there is LOTS of (we got good lawyers so it isn't really) libeling everywhere, and we can't take people (especially corporate 'people') at their word.

No free speech, as far as I understand it. Less limited in some places than in others, but no-one yet has had the balls to back 'Free SpeechTM'
