Oddly this visit is one of the few 'practical' in a political sense functions they have performed in decades. This visit marks the 'normalisation' of relations between Ireland and the UK. Long overdue to many of us.

..I will add that I am a republican (as in ant-monarchy!), so I am not rushing to their defence.

I beg to disagree, what this visit marks is that the current gummint has been paid off by the ascendency, there should be no "normalisation" until the teddy bear got its head again.

Actually, my ancestor at the Boyne was not part of the French troops.

and It's been my perception that the problems are not really about religion, it's just that each camp sided with a religion that has since served as a marker and an excuse, but the real problem lies deeper and is tied to ethnic groups.
