My turn to question a RatSkep mod's judgement

Post by Ronja » Sat Oct 30, 2010 4:19 pm

Added 2nd November 2010: Ronja wants you to know that this issue was dealt with by RatSkep staff in a timely manner and quite satisfactorily, as reading the whole RatSkep thread (linked to in the OP below) also shows.

I felt a modnote on http://www.rationalskepticism.org today was not fair, and have said so, in the Feedback forum as was requested in that modnote. It will be interesting to see if my question (which I tried to make as fact-based as possible) will lead to anything. This is it:

http://www.rationalskepticism.org/feedb ... 15154.html
Why did only Zwaarddijk get a warning?

Postby Ronja » Oct 30, 2010 6:08 pm

Regarding the "Gay rights cause exodus from Finnish national church" thread in News, Politics & Current Affairs:

Zwaarddijk has just received an advisory modnote
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p549209

However, Zwaarddijk's blowing up was the direct result of that Sityl has been repeatedly derailing the thread with off-topic comments, most of which were pretty clearly needling (provoking) Zwaarddijk. So why was not also Sityl reprimaned, and preferably before Zwaarddijk, as Sityl's against-FUA behavior predated Zwaarddijk's?

Sityl's off-topic posts started with this: http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p523062
and at least these three of Sityl's posts in the thread have been reported:
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p524695
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p530132
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p547646

AFAICS, Sityl has not made even one truly ON-topic post in this thread, only off-topic (and aggravating) ones.

Fairly early on, also others reacted to what Sityl was doing, e.g.
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p524685
and
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p524703
and
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p524751

So why was only Zwaarddijk modnoted? :ask:

Isn't Sityl a mod?

Yes. I purposely did not to mention that in my question. I want to give the RatSkep mod/admin team a chance to do the right thing, without insinuations.

Why not give them a chance to sort it out there before posting about it here? :dono:

I'm not sure how much difference it would have made tbh. How many [ratskep] moderators are active here?

Bernhard noted I was slagging off RatSkep, so I guess he looks here from time to time at least, but afaik he doesn't moderate.

This kind of thing is quite common, though it is unusual in that the antagonist is a Moderator - I would guess it's because he/she is a newly made man/woman and doesn't know how to play the game right yet.

I wouldn't get my hopes up if I were you.

Because I am paranoid by nature, have seen a number of RatSkep posts disappear and links to posts get mixed up during this last week, and (most importantly) I am a fair bit more angry about both Sityl's behavior and the modnote that Zwaarddijk got than I wanted to show in my official complaint (the one I quoted in the OP).

In other words: I wanted independent proof (as much as one can get on the open net) of that I have posted that question on RatSkep. I also needed to vent. And I do not feel safe to vent at RatSkep. Which is really sad - but as I said before: I am by my nature paranoid. It may well be that I am overreacting.

And Anthroban: no, I have not gotten my hopes up. But I am trying to learn more about why some web communities seem to work well and some not so well, and posing the question in the OP may help me learn more.

What's that about curiosity and the cat? :ask:

I've been meaning to write a spider bot to log posts on 'hot' threads every 15 minutes or so so I can compare them and see just what the mods are up to.. but I've developed an addiction that is eating up all my time.

Let's just hope this doesn't start another war like the last time someone posted questioning moderation over at RS.

I'm wild just like a rock, a stone, a tree
And I'm free, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I flow, just like a brook, a stream, the rain
And I fly, just like a bird up in the sky
And I'll surely die, just like a flower plucked
And dragged away and thrown away
And then one day it turns to clay
It blows away, it finds a ray, it finds its way
And there it lays until the rain and sun
Then I breathe, just like the wind the breeze that blows
And I grow, just like a baby breastfeeding
And it's beautiful, that's life

I don't see why this thread is in the Lounge. It's a complaint about member activity at another forum .. shouldn't the complaint be returned to the open Wilder Web subforum where those members can see it, not hidden away here?

1) The situation at RatSkep has been addressed by their mods, pretty well IMO. See these posts there for details, if you are interested:

http://www.rationalskepticism.org/feedb ... ml#p550246
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/feedb ... ml#p550347
http://www.rationalskepticism.org/news- ... ml#p550476

2) Why this thread was moved to the Lounge:

Mai PMed me after Dev's comment:
devogue wrote:Why not give them a chance to sort it out there before posting about it here? :dono:
and asked if I wanted this thread moved to the Pub.

My answering PM to Mai was this:
OK, if you feel it sits better there. Would the Lounge be OK? And would you also please edit the OP to indicate why the thread was moved, and that I've explicitly OKed the move?

Thanks, and sorry for the trouble. I'm still learning about where what belongs, and where things belong is - ummm - shall we say a bit fluid around here at times... And that is much more of a compliment than a complaint! ;)
Mai, +1:ed by Twoflower and me, had expressed concerns in this thread that it could develop into a marathon "war" thread (if it stays in the Wilder Web was implied, if I understood correctly). However, if the beginning of the OP is edited to indicate that my complaint was handled in a timely manner at RatSkep, I don't see why this thread could not be moved back to the Wilder Web now. That is, after all, where I originally posted it.

IMO, further discussion about where this thread should be (if any such discussion ensues) DOES belong in this thread. But that's just my opinion. :dono:

And just in case anyone wonders: I am definitely not angry at anyone here, and only somewhat peeved about the behavior of truly few members at RatSkep. It is a pity I have not felt comfortable enough to informally discuss RatSkep moderating practices at RatSkep (yet), but I think this incident has helped me many steps closer to a comfortable enough relationship to RatSkep, too. Which is all good. :levi:
