What did you once believe that you later found out was crap?

Post by Coito ergo sum » Tue May 11, 2010 12:36 pm

Come clean everyone. What did you once believe was true, that you later found out was total crap.

I'll start: wheatgrass juice. I once believed that it was the best thing ever. I found out it holds almost no significant nutritional value at all. It doesn’t have much in the way of vitamins, minerals, or anything your body needs at all. I realized, after spending hundreds of dollars on the$3 and $4 a shot grass-tasting nonsense that I'd be far better off with a sprig of broccoli and an apple. Some people claim the chlorophyll in wheatgrass juice is salubrious, but that molecule breaks down in your stomach, so it really does nothing for you.

I fell for the bullshit hook, line and sinker because, for some reason, I did not do basic research into it before adopting it and even advocating it to others. I was embarrassed when I learned the lack of evidence for the efficacy of wheatgrass juice.

So, what have you folks fallen for? Yes, religion may be one of them. Therapeutic Touch? Reiki? Accupuncture? Homeopathy?

Let's hear the confessions!

I once thought that you couldn't just say all homeopathy is a load of shit. I assumed that each remedy should be tested individually like any other claimed treatment.... then I realised (after it being pointed out to my by Ghat) that all homeopathic remedies contain zero or nearly zero active ingredients. Later I also read about the supposed mechanism by which they work.

After that I realised you can say all homeopathy is a load of shit.

You mean you set a trap for Father Christmas and your dad walked into it and got a concussion? Not bad!

Aside from believing in Sinterklaas, the local variant of Father Christmas (and his actual origin) - even though I was always asking tough questions about that - I've never really held such beliefs. Not that I can remember anyway. Maybe some political ideas? I was somewhat leftist when I was thirteen..

I believed quite a bit of this shit when I was a teenager. Then I grew up.
Strangely I never ever believed in Santa or the tooth-fairy (or the Muppets).

Well the Muppets one I was a child. About 4 or 5. I remember asking my dad what the things hanging off Kermits wrists were. The bastards told me "Bracelets". Same with Santa and the Tooth-Fairy. The rest I believed mainly through being a big X-Files fan as a teen. As soon as I got the internet and started reading up on it in 2000 most of those beliefs were dashed very quickly. I guess they were never that strong. I don't remember struggling to let them go. It was more like "That sounds more reasonable".

Oh yeah. That reminds me of another thing I used to believe. That you should automatically respect women.

In my teens, I used to think Erik von Daniken's ideas sounded plausible. :nono:
