Re: The Coronavirus Thread
Your chances might be a bit higher due to age and rotundness, but if you are vaccinated you significantly reduce your chances of getting the long version of it. I'm not particularly fearful of it, given I'm generally healthy and soon to be quadruple vaxed (booked in for this friday). I've also had covid already and suffered very mild symptoms for about a day. Hopefully any future infections will be likewise minor.

I'd say I'm only back to about 90% after my dose in May. It's not stopping me do anything - I just feel like I've always got a cold coming on.

Age and fitness has a bearing bearing when you get infected and get a serious case, it impacts your/my survival and treatment severity.Your chances might be a bit higher due to age and rotundness, but if you are vaccinated you significantly reduce your chances of getting the long version of it. Age and fitness has no established bearing on long covid ...it's ridiculously random including kids who have typically heroic immune systems.
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41598-021-95565-8it has not yet been established how sex, gender, age, ethnicity, underlying health conditions, viral dose, or progression of COVID-19 significantly affect the risk of developing long-term effects of COVID-195.
Anecdotally I have two close people ...both in their 30s, both with mild cases ...one has been to emergency twice with heart issues, the other is pretty much on disability now after 6 months - unable to work and needing a wheelchair at times.
This is a good sized study
andResults
One thousand thirteen of 2509 (40%) of adults and 360 of 849 (42%) of children discharged participated in both the 6- and 12-month follow-ups. PCC prevalence was 50% (95% CI 47–53) in adults and 20% (95% CI 16–24) in children at 6 months, with decline to 34% (95% CI 31–37) and 11% (95% CI 8–14), respectively, at 12 months. In adults, female sex was associated with PCC at 6- and 12-month follow-up (OR 2.04, 95% CI 1.57 to 2.65) and (OR 2.04, 1.54 to 2.69), respectively. Pre-existing hypertension (OR 1.42, 1.04 to 1.94) was associated with post-COVID-19 condition at 12 months. In children, neurological comorbidities were associated with PCC both at 6 months (OR 4.38, 1.36 to 15.67) and 12 months (OR 8.96, 2.55 to 34.82) while allergic respiratory diseases were associated at 12 months (OR 2.66, 1.04 to 6.47).
Conclusions
Although prevalence of PCC declined one year after discharge, one in three adults and one in ten children experienced ongoing sequelae. In adults, females and persons with pre-existing hypertension, and in children, persons with neurological comorbidities or allergic respiratory diseases are at higher risk of PCC.
About 2 million people in the UK currently have long COVID, according to the latest data from the Office for National Statistics.
In the UK, long COVID is defined as “signs and symptoms that continue or develop after acute COVID-19”. This definition is further split into people who have symptoms between four to 12 weeks after infection (ongoing symptomatic COVID-19) and for 12 weeks or more (post-COVID syndrome).
Symptoms can include fatigue, breathlessness, difficulty concentrating and many more – but the precise nature of the symptoms is not well understood. There are also gaps in our knowledge when it comes to the frequency of long COVID, and whether there are particular factors that put people at higher risk of developing the condition.
https://theconversation.com/long-covid- ... rch-185911
from that article - the Nature article
https://www.nature.com/articles/s41467-022-30836-0Given the scale of the pandemic, even a low proportion of individuals with long COVID will generate a major burden of enduring illness11.
Current understanding of long COVID risk factors and its frequency remains poor, impeding mechanistic understanding and intervention and evidence-based service planning
So first line of defence ...don't get covid and easiest is avoid crowded areas and wear a mask
The scariest aspect was the enduring impact on immune systems in kids ...
Kids have incredible immune systems...but
https://www.washingtonpost.com/health/2 ... v-viruses/At one point last month, children were admitted to Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital with a startling range of seven respiratory viruses. They had adenovirus and rhinovirus, respiratory syncytial virus and human metapneumovirus, influenza and parainfluenza, as well as the coronavirus — which many specialists say is to blame for the unusual surges.
“That’s not typical for any time of year and certainly not typical in May and June,” said Thomas Murray, an infection-control expert and associate professor of pediatrics at Yale. Some children admitted to the hospital were co-infected with two viruses and a few with three, he said.
More than two years into the coronavirus pandemic, familiar viruses are acting in unfamiliar ways. Respiratory syncytial virus, known as RSV, typically limits its suffocating assaults to the winter months.

Byrne says while evidence is still growing about risk, and while some people who had only a mild Covid-19 illness are diagnosed with long Covid, generally “if you’re older, if you have certain comorbidities like diabetes, if you had acute symptoms initially, if you were in hospital … all those things make you more likely to develop long Covid”.

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
The CDC begs to differ somewhat.
Not enough is known yet - I'd much rather avoid being in the "had covid" pool.
from the horse's mouth
https://www.reuters.com/business/health ... 022-06-22/Long COVID symptoms range from fatigue, rapid heartbeat, shortness of breath, cognitive difficulties, chronic pain, sensory abnormalities and muscle weakness. They can be debilitating and last for weeks or months after recovery from the initial infection.
The CDC analysis also found that younger adults were more likely to have persistent symptoms than older adults.
https://health.ucdavis.edu/coronavirus/ ... ng-haulersFor some people, COVID-19 symptoms can last anywhere from four weeks to six months after testing positive for the virus. These patients, given the name "long haulers", have in theory recovered from the worst impacts of COVID-19 and have tested negative. However, they still have symptoms of what's being called "long COVID." There seems to be no consistent reason for this to happen.
This condition can affect anyone – old and young, otherwise healthy people and those battling other conditions. It has been seen in those who were hospitalized with COVID-19 and patients with very mild symptoms. Studies indicate that about 10% of people infected with COVID-19 will experience long-haul symptoms.

https://www.cdc.gov/coronavirus/2019-nc ... index.htmlWhat You Need to Know
Post-COVID conditions can include a wide range of ongoing health problems; these conditions can last weeks, months, or years.
Post-COVID conditions are found more often in people who had severe COVID-19 illness, but anyone who has been infected with the virus that causes COVID-19 can experience post-COVID conditions, even people who had mild illness or no symptoms from COVID-19.
People who are not vaccinated against COVID-19 and become infected may also be at higher risk of developing post-COVID conditions compared to people who were vaccinated and had breakthrough infections.
While most people with post-COVID conditions have evidence of infection or COVID-19 illness, in some cases, a person with post-COVID conditions may not have tested positive for the virus or known they were infected.
CDC and partners are working to understand more about who experiences post-COVID conditions and why, including whether groups disproportionately impacted by COVID-19 are at higher risk.
As of July 2021, “long COVID,” also known as post-COVID conditions, can be considered a disability under the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Learn more: Guidance on “Long COVID” as a Disability Under the ADA, Section

Re: The Coronavirus Thread
You're probably a fair chance of getting it now that we are in another wave and there's stuff all restrictions or mask wearing. Best not to worry about it until you get it, if that happens. And remember your chance of getting long covid is still pretty low, and if you do get it you are a good chance to recover fully in a couple of months. And if you get long covid, you aren't guaranteed to get bad symptoms. You might just have heart palpitations for a couple of weeks.
Basically what I'm saying is keep it all in perspective and don't overly fear it.
