My "classical" is nearly all baroque and Sibelius. every 5 years or so a new violinist pops up and I have to get at least two CDs. Rachel Podger is my latest craze, along with another woman, Spanish. The previous hot shots have been men. Here is Rachel

here is an old chestnut they all have to tackle. Rarely do I get the Bach works, as the good violin works are for violin solo or the old Brandenburgs which I have 5 times over.

Check out Hilary Hahn's version with the Swedish State Symphony.

OK. Likely modern instruments, though. This one, Podger, is the trend. 8 musicians play the concerto, miked like a rock band individually in the studio. Classical used to be recordable with two mikes for the orchestra and one for any live audience. The applause part was then mixed to give you a live feel.

Oh, I was talking about the Sibelius. But she has done the Bach violin concertos with the LA Chamber Orchestra.

Personally I prefer Kennedy's version with the Berlin PHil.

OK. The Sibelius violin concerto was really an oddity. Sibelius could play violin, and did, in his youth and learning years, in chamber settings. He became a composer after failing as symphony orchestra violinist.

back to Vivaldi, here are a good number of my 4 Seasons recordings. Not all, probably 10 more in cardboard sleeves. The first 3 on the second line are on modern instruments, the Spivakov Moscow being the best. The blue Borealis outfit is a Finnish one, a "folk" four seasons. There is one for flute and hudry gurdy too.

I have the both the Kennedy Vivaldis with the Berlin Phil and an excellent reading and beautiful recording of the Four Seasons by Adrian Chandler. Oo look, YouTube has it too - albeit in separate movements...

It's supposed to be music, Hilary, not an attempt at breaking some sort of speed record. I hit the stop button after about three minutes. Give me the old recordings done by I Musici, the Academy of St. Martin-in the Fields, the English Chamber Orchestra and the Academy of Ancient Music instead.

Oh, and thank you very much for the link to Nahre Sol, Brian. I've spent quite a few hours listening to some of her presentations since you made me aware of her, and I will keep dipping into her offerings in the future.

I like Ms Hahn's barrelling allegros. She has a lightness of touch that you often don't find in those earlier, more romantic approaches - which I also enjoy btw - and great sensitivity in the more introspective passages. For me the glory of Bach resides in the notes rather than the interpretation. I can pretty much listen to anyone doing anything Bach if the notes are in the right order! :)

And as for Ms Sol - you're welcome. Spread it around.

That's not enough for me. Though I enjoy just about any style, be it literal, flashy, performed with period instruments, modern ones, the Moog, or whatever else, Ms Hahn's rendition is not among them. Hers reminds me of performance by a 1920's style pianola. But yeah, no, there are no objective criteria. To each their own.
