2019 Banished Words

Post by Tero » Thu Jan 03, 2019 5:52 pm

Collusion is used for more or less "conspiracy."

LSSU FB page:
HERE IS THE 2019 LIST!
______

Wheelhouse, as in area of expertise – Chris, Battle Creek, Mich., “It's not in my wheelhouse to explain why dreadful words should be banished!”; Currie, Ottawa, Ontario (Canada), “Irritating, has become a cliché, annoys me, offence to the English language, etc.”; Kevin, Portland, Ore., “It's an awkward word to use in the 21st century. Most people have never seen a wheelhouse.”
______

In the books . . ., as in finished or concluded – Sandy, White Lake Township, Mich., “It seems everyone's holiday party is in the books this year, and it's all there for friends to view on social media, along with the photos of the happy party attendees.”
______

Wrap my head around – Linda, Bloomington, Minn., “Impossible to do and makes no sense.”
______

Platform – Michael, Alameda, Calif., “People use it as an excuse to rant. Facebook, Instagram, Twitter have become platforms. Even athletes call a post-game interview a ‘platform.’ Step down from the platform, already.”
______

Collusion, as in two or more parties limiting competition by deception - John, Grosse Pointe Park, Mich., “We all need to collude on getting rid of this word.”
______

OTUS family of acronyms such as POTUS, FLOTUS, SCOTUS – David, Kinross, Mich., “Overused useless word for the President, Supreme Court, First Lady.”
______

Ghosting – Carrie, Caledonia, Mich., “Somebody doesn't want to talk with you. Get over it. No need to bring the paranormal into the equation.”
______

Yeet, as in to vigorously throw or toss – Emily, Sault Ste. Marie, Mich., “If I hear one more freshman say "yeet," I might just yeet myself out a window.”
______

Litigate – Ronald, Fredericton, New Brunswick (Canada), “Originally meant to take a claim or dispute to a law court . . . appropriated by politicians and journalists for any matter of controversy in the public sphere.”
______

Grapple – David, Traverse City, Mich., “People who struggle with ideas and issues now grapple with them. I prefer to grapple with a wrestler or an overgrown tree."
______

Eschew – Mary, Toronto, Ont. (Canada), “Nobody ever actually says this word out loud, they just write it for filler.”
______

Crusty – Hannah, Campbellsville, Ky., “This has become a popular insult. It's disgusting and sounds weird. Make the madness stop.”
______

Optics – Bob Tempe, Ariz., “The trendy way to say ‘appearance’.”
______

Legally drunk – Philip, Auburn, Ind., “You're a little tipsy, that's all. That's legally drunk. People who are ticketed for drunk driving are actually ‘illegally drunk,’ and we should say so.”
______

Thought Leader – Matt, Superior, Colo., “Thoughts aren’t ranked or scored. How can someone hold a thought-lead, much less even lead by thought?”; Paul, Ann Arbor, Mich., “If you follow a thought leader, you're not much of a thinker.”
______

Importantly – Constance, Pace, Tex., “Totally unnecessary when ‘important’ is sufficient. ‘More importantly’ (banned in 1992) apparently sounds more important but is also senseless.”
______

Accoutrements – Leslie, Scottsdale, Ariz., “Hard to spell, not specific, and anachronistic when ‘accessories’ will do.”
______

Most important election of our time . . . – José, Ozark, Ark., “Not that we haven’t had six or seven back-to-back most important elections of our time.”

Said Daemon, who's sorry too, but y'see we didn't have no choice
And our hands they are many and we'd be of one voice
We've come all the way from Wigan to get up and state
Our case for survival before it's too late

"Anachronistic" It's an outdated word. Same as "archaic" and "superannuated". Just say "old".

Seriously, most of the words listed so far are OK with me. People who object to them are plebeians who want to drag everyone else down to their level by impoverishing the richness of language. Either that, or they work for Ingsoc.
Newspeak is the language of Oceania, a fictional totalitarian state and the setting of the novel Nineteen Eighty-Four (1949), by George Orwell. To meet the ideological requirements of English Socialism (Ingsoc) in Oceania, the ruling Party created Newspeak, a controlled language of restricted grammar and limited vocabulary, meant to limit the freedom of thought — personal identity, self-expression, free will — that threatens the ideology of the régime of Big Brother and the Party
Now, if people object to words and phrases as they are used in business management speak, I'm with them all the way, but business management speak itself is just another form of newspeak anyway, and it serves the same purpose.

Apparently the new PC term for 'concentration camps' is 'inverted safe spaces'.

Indeed. The activity of business to actualize deliverable interfaces with their core participants in the sub-retail domain of value donation encapsulates an approach to niche markets that attempts to disentangle cohesive representative models in favour of a performance-based paradigm predicated on an over-facilitation of the consumer-provider dichotomy.

Well, management speak does not merely try to be obtuse. Its objective is to influence how people do - and don't - think about "free enterprise" (itself a loaded expression), the chief aim being to steer them away from entertaining thoughts that there might be some objectionable aspects of it. So, employees don't get sacked any more, for example. The company is merely right-sizing. And Milton Friedman forbid, the economy never shrinks unless there is interference from ebil government. There's always growth, albeit periodically of the negative kind. And yes, that does have the aforementioned positive consequence: right-sizing.

That may involve presumptive deallocation of the etymology, in which case I implore your indulgence.

Good fucking luck to them. Thought leaders and manque language reformers have been bleating on the sidelines for centuries about how this and that should be done to improve general usage of the English language. Those endeavors being almost entirely ignored by journalists and hoi polloi alike.

Serious writers may spend time with a volume like Dreyer's English or Fowler's but such efforts go unappreciated except by pernickety copy editors and cantankerous lay pedants. While I myself may qualify among the latter, and I may agree with sentiments expressed in the list, I mostly confine my reactions to growling and muttering quietly to myself.

I don't agree with those who sneer at rarely used words. As a young man I made an effort to avoid more arcane vocabulary, but at some point I discarded that regime and no longer care if somebody looks askance when I use a word like 'exigencies' in casual conversation.

One doesn’t hear the word ‘rapscallion’ or for that matter ‘bounder’ half as much today as one should.
