Humans and volcanoes caused nearly all of global heating in past 140 years
Posted on 30 May 2019 by dana1981
Emissions from fossil fuels and volcanoes can explain nearly all of the changes in Earth’s surface temperatures over the past 140 years, a new study has found.

The research refutes the popular climate denial myth that recent global warming is merely a result of natural cycles.

Those arguments have always suffered a key physical flaw, namely that cycles are cyclical. For example, El Niño events, which temporarily raise global surface temperatures by bringing warm water up to the shallow ocean layer, are offset by La Niña events, which have the opposite effect. While a given decade might have more El Niño or La Niña events, resulting in a short-term surface warming or cooling, over the long term their effects cancel out.

World leaders are lying to the public about the climate crisis and dismissing scientific evidence.

That was the stark warning from former US Secretary of State John Kerry who said the truth is not just being ignored but altered.

“Today we have public leaders who not only try to avoid the truth, but who try to alter it, through thousands of lies,” he said.

The Defense Department is worried about climate change – and also a huge carbon emitter

Scientists and security analysts have warned for more than a decade that global warming is a potential national security concern.

They project that the consequences of global warming – rising seas, powerful storms, famine and diminished access to fresh water – may make regions of the world politically unstable and prompt mass migration and refugee crises.

Some worry that wars may follow.

World leaders are lying to the public.

Is this considered 'news'? It has been clear since I first heard two state opposite 'facts', both insisting the other guy was lying...

Monkeys living in South America are highly vulnerable to climate change and face an "elevated risk of extinction", according to a new University of Stirling-led study.

The research, involving an international team of scientists, found that a large percentage of non-human primates - including monkeys, lemurs and apes - are facing substantial temperature increases and marked habitat changes over the next 30 years.

Protesters march demanding urgent measures to combat climate change in Kolkata, India last week [Rupak De Chowdhuri/Reuters]
A climate change paper grabbed headlines this week with its terrifying prediction of what the world will be in 30 years' time - absent drastic and immediate change to human societies.

"World of outright chaos," "Climate apocalypse," "We're all gonna die," the media banners blared.

The sobering headlines and equally disconcerting stories beneath described a "scenario analysis" by an Australian think-tank, Breakthrough National Center for Climate Restoration.

The paper portrayed what the year 2050 will look like if urgent action to build carbon-neutral energy systems around the world fails to come to fruition in the next 10 years.

If I didn't know that political leaders lie in service of their goals, I would be pretty panicked by this stuff.

Of course, most people know about political lies, and why they are used, so other than little kids, these ideas won't find much support. Adults have to go on taking care of the business of living.
