Gerrymandering and census:
There is nothing to the contention that the added census question was inserted to help more minorities vote—the intention is and always was to suppress their ability to participate. Republicans have long feared a “demographic time bomb,” one that would outpace their traditional white constituencies. Rather than find ways to entice those growing populations—with, for example, attractive policy positions—the GOP has doubled down on excluding them from the electorate. Lowering the number of Latinx people counted by the census would aid Republican efforts to gerrymander away just representation for this growing population. That would allow for another decade of over-representation of non-Hispanic whites, who are, presumably, mostly by Republicans. This isn’t a post-facto analysis—Hofeller wrote it all down in advance.

The transition official responsible for the census, Mark Neuman, testified last year that Hofeller had informed him the inclusion of the citizenship question would “increase Latino political representation.” But a 2015 study found on the GOP operative’s hard drives suggested that it would do the opposite: “Adding a citizenship question to the census would allow Republicans to draft even more extreme gerrymandered maps to stymie Democrats,” according to the Times’s summary. The Times further shows it was that study that was at the root of the Commerce Department’s push to add the citizenship question.

In that total viewer slot, Hannity was number one in the quarter with 3.12 million watching to Maddow’s 3.05 million. With the rest of the top five most watched and highest rated cable news show for the quarter belonging to FNC, not a single CNN program made that top tier cut. Slightly less impressive that than 69 quarters in a row most watched award, FNC is now the highest rated cable newser among the 25-54s for the 44th consecutive quarter.

Utah recently passed a law that requires doctors to give anesthesia to a fetus prior to performing an abortion that occurs at 20 weeks of gestation or later.

The law assumes that a fetus may be able to feel pain at that stage in development; however, doctors groups and other critics of the law argue that a fetus cannot feel pain at 20 weeks gestational age.

John Boehner slams Republicans: 'There is no Republican Party. There's a Trump party'

Former House Speaker John Boehner — Bloody Mary in hand — attacked the Republican party Thursday at the Mackinac Policy Conference in Michigan.

"There is no Republican Party. There's a Trump party. The Republican Party is kind of taking a nap somewhere," Boehner, a Republican himself, said.

The Cincinnati native also said that despite his close relationship with President Trump while he was still speaker, he never expected Trump to win the election.

"Donald Trump, who I know well, was one of my supporters, when I was speaker," Boehner recalled. "I was having a rough week, Trump would call me, pat me on the back, cheer me up, played a lot of golf together. But president? Really? I never quite saw this."

Boehner also claimed that Trump himself did not expect to win the election.

"The two most surprised people in the world that night were Hillary Clinton and Donald Trump. Hillary Clinton thought that she was going to win, and Donald Trump thought that he was going to lose."

And yet another person who did not expect Trump to win, Boehner said, is first lady Melania Trump.

"I think Donald Trump promised Melania that he would not win," Boehner said. She didn’t have to worry about ever living in the White House. It’s probably why she doesn't look real happy every day. But, well, maybe one reason," he said.
