Gotta admit; when I saw one of our resident Trumpists was posting that Notre Dame was on fire I thought Islam.

Only 'cause I'm used to him rushing out to post any time Islam does something wrong in his desperation to prove to us his racism is justified. If anyone else had posted it I wouldn't have thought anything.

Hey, I think there's a new game in there. You could apply the non-sequitur to any interesting news item.

"If the guy from Tallahassee who was eaten by his own dog after dying at home serves to spur the White man into blah blah blah...

White nationalism, born in the USA, is now a global terror threat.

The recent massacre of 50 Muslim worshippers at two mosques in Christchurch, New Zealand is the latest confirmation that white supremacy is a danger to democratic societies across the globe.

Despite President Donald Trump’s suggestion that white nationalist terrorism is not a major problem, recent data from the United Nations, University of Chicago and other sources show the opposite.

As more people embrace a xenophobic and anti-immigrant worldview, it is fueling hostility and violence toward those deemed “outsiders” – whether because of their religion, skin color or national origin.

We know the alleged New Zealand mosque shooter’s hatred of Muslims was inspired by American white nationalism – he said so on Twitter.

His online “manifesto” includes references to cultural conflicts that the author believed would eventually lead the United States to separate along ethnic, political and racial lines.

The alleged attacker also wrote that he supports President Donald Trump “as a symbol of renewed white identity.”

Trump and other right-wing politicians like French presidential candidate Marine Le Pen and Dutch opposition leader Geert Wilders have blamed the very real problems of modern life – growing economic instability, rising inequality and industrial decay – on immigrants and people of color.
The alleged attacker also wrote that he supports President Donald Trump “as a symbol of renewed white identity.”

Facebook bans far-right groups including BNP, EDL and Britain First
Years after the company first dismissed fears it was empowering extremists, Facebook has permanently banned a number of far-right organisations and individuals including the British National party (BNP), the English Defence League (EDL) and Britain First .

The ban, which came into effect at midday on Thursday, extends beyond the groups and individuals specifically cited as hate organisations: posts and other content that “expresses praise or support” for them will also be banned, as will users who coordinate support for the groups.

The move is the latest in a series of crackdowns by Facebook, beginning in February when it banned the rightwing activist Tommy Robinson under the same rules, and continuing in March when it reversed a longstanding policy that had allowed “white nationalists” and “white separatists” to post on the site, provided they steered clear of promoting “white supremacy”.

A further 12 individuals and accounts have been banned by the site: the BNP and its former chairman, Nick Griffin; Britain First, its leader, Paul Golding, and former deputy leader Jayda Fransen; the EDL and Paul Ray, a founder member of the group; Knights Templar International and the far-right activist Jim Dowson; the National Front and its leader, Tony Martin; and the far-right activist Jack Renshaw, a former spokesman for the proscribed terrorist organisation National Action...
Oh dear, what a shame. :tea:

I welcome this of course and while is is clear these ghastly little fascists have tried to spread hate and fear I do wonder if and when the same fate will befall far left groups too. Will Facebook and it’s ilk be just for middle of the road beige politics and points of view?

Which far left groups promote hatred and ethnic cleansing?

Well none as far as I am aware, but that’s not the point. Suppose they openly promoted the ‘violent overthrow of capitalism through the rising up of the proletariat’ and it was decided that this was too radical to have a platform on social media.

My point was about the process of making every debate about the middle ground and the potential for limiting debate that would have. Please don’t suggest I support the far right in any way!

I don't think you're in the far right, but these far right groups often preach messages which go against the terms of conditions of these social sites. They are not banned for being far right. They are banned for inciting violence or breaking conditions which forbid racist, sexist, or homophobic language as per the T&C they agreed to.

Facebook is an establishment like any other, only digital. It has an obligation to protect its patrons. Getting rid of nasty, disruptive, and violent shits from a digital pkatform is no different to bouncers throwing out riff raff in a physical one like a pub.

maybe not, but that obstacle to free expression is not going to make them any friends, whether among extremist, plot believers, or those whose motto is 'I disagree with you but I'll fight so you can express your shit talk".
