Zappa in late 70s and early 80s bands wanted two keyboard players, one on synth etc, one on piano that also sang. This first one that sang sang these scat things. Tommy Mars. Both keyboard players played the synth or piano type and would switch back and forth.

this is probably Tommy as well. For an audition they all had to play this. Zappa played some keyboard parts on and off, and the synclavier bits, but he played mostly one hand. So he was composing parts he did not know how to play himself.

Zappa had pure music running through his veins. The Black Page piano solo is stunningly beautiful. I don’t know what album the first is from though (or is it just a video?)

Most of Tommy’s scat singing is here

When he sang actual words, as in Envelopes, well it was worse.
That album and Sheik Yerbuti are sort of the same live shows.

Not spending 85 dollars for 5 CDs but as I have some balance in the bank account, splurged on 3 LP set, coming Monday. I will take all the sides but one and make a playlist of it. Skipping the Enema bandit side. Burning maybe one disc out of it. I have most of the songs on the old CD set but disc 3 is extras, including the piano Black Page above.

Diva is currently at work on a scarf, but not just any scarf. “Emilio the Scarf” is a project with its own Twitter handle. Described on the profile page as “a magical piece of art,” the scarf promises that “one day I will be 5,280 feet long.”

Don’t know where you dig them up from Tero. I must say though I know my favourite pieces and listen to them often. The various versions of concerts with slightly different takes on the same songs get to be a bit of a bore - as do the misogynistic songs - plenty of those. I genuinely believe the man was a musical genius, but I suspect generally a horrible human being. Arrogant, opinionated and sexist. Sad really, but maybe he had to be both to be Frank.

There is a whole mess over here at this link. But since I only collect official releases, my job is easier. These people collect and trade the concert tapes. It's a little beyond me as you have to "seed" them to transfer. If you burn CDs out of them you would have hundreds of CDs in cases. Most people then get flip albums that have space for minimum paperwork.

http://www.zappateers.com/bb/index.php?c=1

Some discussion in there leads me to look up what it was and I can get most things off youtube, that much skill I have. I've also replaced a number of my Ryko discs with Zappa label discs, which improved sound on old albums, such as the pre 71 classic era. The Ryko Hot Rats had extended tracks, the Zappa one has what we had on LP.

And then there are the LP collectors over there as well. Looking for rare mono prints.

He was pretty much a dictator, but the musicians knew what they signed up for. George Duke was special so Zappa never pushed him around. So was Ruth. He had the later mallet players but they never had quite the parts she had.
