Saw Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri this afternoon. What a masterpiece. I hesitate to call it entertainmement because there was some very heavy duty stuff in there along with a few laughs. A masterful and a completely engrossing film. Highly recommended!

Kingsman 2: The Golden Circle. Rather boring (inept anti-drugs subtext) second movie, should have left it at 1 and not gone for the milking of that one hit wonder, let alone pushing for a trilogy.

I watched Mother! last night (DVD). It has divided opinion hugely with some people saying they think it was the best film of 2017 and others that it is a load of garbage.

It tries - and largely succeeds - to be strange and unsettling. It is surreal and there is no real story line. And without actually being a horror film it uses quite a lot of horror 'tropes'.

I quite like experimental and adventurous films, but this one just seemed to be trying to be symbolic and deliberately obscure for the sake of it. Quite a ride but in the end not of substance. Also pretty freaky if you feel like administering a bit of a shock to yourself!

Next door are doing a loft conversion and workmen we’re making a hell of a noise. Also it was raining so two good reasons to escape to the pics. Went to see Finest Hour. I know the story inside out but Oldman was superb and deserved the Oscar for sure. The script was used a little too readily to expound the plot but I guess a lot of younger people and Americans may have needed that. Definitely worth a couple of hours in the cinema.

Arthur & Merlin. Above average sword and fantasy saga with regard one line quips. Underfunded so everyone running around without horses making it seem a little Monty PYthon in places...explaining its lack of fame.

Review time: Ready Player One (seen this afternoon in 3D)

A great adventure in the traditional mode complete with lad coming of age, love story and a nasty baddy. Brilliantly made and directed, great music, lost of nostalgia and that good old American feelgood thing.

I'm in danger of damning with faint praise her. It was the weakest of Spielberg's special effects blockbuster in my view. The film is set for about 80% of the time in virtual reality and yet the VR of 2045 was lacking in imagination I thought. There were a few plot holes you could drive a truck through too.

Having said all that it was fantastic entertainment and worth the price of the ticket. Go see it - just don't expect Jaws or ET.

Snake in Eagle's Shadow. Yuen Woo-ping, Jackie Chan, 1978.

Don't worry about the plot. It's not important.

Avengers: Infinity War.

Amazing juggling act here. 22 heroes spread across different planets and yet somehow everyone gets a parts and interactions with each other, as well as combining powers in inventive ways, without ever feeling bloated. Cleverly they divided the story into 5, with each of the main Avengers teamed off separately with newer heroes, and Thanos on his own quest. This helped greatly towards keeping the story focused.

Lots of nice surprises thrown in for anyone following the series from the beginning.

Can't say much more because it's too easy to spoil but it shouldn't disappoint any fans of the series.

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.
