Russian Avantgarde
Russian Avantgarde
The best part of this Utopian project that started 100 years ago was the Russian Avantgarde: the best artists of the time put their creative power towards making everything new, new materials for new clothes for the new people of the new society, new music and new art! The intensity and the multitude of the creative community of the Russian Avantgarde is unmatched in the world and in history because the historical context is unique.

And yet, in the end, so many fine and great artists were exiled, co-opted into producing propaganda, or simply disappeared.

The revolution that devoured its own offspring...
Nurse, where the fuck's my cardigan?
And my gin!
And my gin!
Re: Russian Avantgarde
Of course, they did not continue to support something that was not to be supported. Even Mayakovskij killed himself. But it was a glorious period, especially the early Avantgarde before the revolution, the 1910-1915 futurism!Brian Peacock wrote:And yet, in the end, so many fine and great artists were exiled, co-opted into producing propaganda, or simply disappeared.

It's an area I'm not all that familiar with. I'm more familiar with the German and Italian expressionists than the Russian avantegarde. Where to start?

The memoirs of Benedict Livshitz are a good place to start. 1910, the first futurist exhibitions in Russia are decades earlier than the French and German expressionism or any other kind of avantgarde. The Russians were all double and triple talents: poets and painters or musicians and painters or all three in one. My favourite guy is Vladimir Mayakovskij, a unique poet and artist! ]

Re: Russian Avantgarde
The period following the 1917 revolution was inspiring in parts of Russia - studied it at Art school and with/from a Marxist perspective at the time. The arts were given full reign, there was no censorship to speak of and the notion of utter freedom from bondage was in the air. Some superb stuff came out of that period. Sadly, as we know all too well, things slowly sunk into totalitarianism and state control to the point you were not free to think for yourself let alone express yourself in any individually creative manner.
Re: Russian Avantgarde
The most exciting part was before 1917, starting 1909-10, when it was all about novelty, breaking out, breaking rules, etc, young people in in their early 20s experimenting, playing at dandies, being outrageous.Rum wrote:The period following the 1917 revolution was inspiring in parts of Russia - studied it at Art school and with/from a Marxist perspective at the time. El Lissitsky studied architecture in Darmstadt, his German wife and son were sent on an exile to Novossibirsk, a huge exhibition in Moscow going on right now. : http://art-and-houses.ru/2017/11/03/v-m ... lissitzky/
