A new and permanent feature of mega-hurricanes?

The succession of intense and deadly tropical cyclones that have barrelled across the Atlantic in recent weeks have left many people wondering if a threshold of some sort has been crossed. Is this chain of hurricanes evidence of some significant new frontier in our changing climate?

The answer is mostly no, but with worrying undertones of yes.

The first thing to note about this season is that it shows the power of science and weather forecasting.
Every year, the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (Noaa) puts out a hurricane forecast for the season that runs from 1 June to 30 November for the north Atlantic, Caribbean and the Gulf of Mexico.
In August, Noaa updated its predictions, stating that there would be 14-19 named storms and of these, 5-9 would become hurricanes.

To date, we've had seven cyclones that have gained category three status or stronger. So this season is unusual but not unprecedented. The bigger picture shows that between 1981 and 2010 the average was six hurricanes per season.
What has happened this year is that a number of natural variable factors have come together and helped boost the number and power of these cyclones. In the background, climate change has loaded the dice.

Just pre-empting the usual suspects here, who I'm surprised haven't yet been parading the clearly ignorant articles on The Daily Fail, The Sun, Breitbart, and The Telegraph published earlier in the week. Too late now because I have them banged to rights.

Glad that's cleared up.

Related to two posts above. Really shows the duplicitous nature of denialism in all its glory. Such brazen shamelessness. You really have to ask if the right-wing ideologues believe they are right in this issue; then why do they have to lie, and twist, and distort, and fabricate?

And that's the shit you can't sweep under no rug.

A Giant, Mysterious Hole Has Opened Up in Antarctica
"Once the sea ice melts back, you have this huge temperature contrast between the ocean and the atmosphere," Moore explained. "It can start driving convection." Denser, colder water sinks to the bottom of the ocean, while warmer water comes to the surface, "which can keep the polynia open once it starts," he said.

Record surge in atmospheric CO2 seen in 2016

Concentrations of CO2 in the Earth's atmosphere surged to a record high in 2016, according to the World Meteorological Organization (WMO).

Last year's increase was 50% higher than the average of the past 10 years.

Researchers say a combination of human activities and the El Niño weather phenomenon drove CO2 to a level not seen in 800,000 years.

Scientists say this risks making global temperature targets largely unattainable.

This year's greenhouse gas bulletin produced by the WMO, is based on measurements taken in 51 countries. Research stations dotted around the globe measure concentrations of warming gases including carbon dioxide, methane and nitrous oxide.

The figures published by the WMO are what's left in the atmosphere after significant amounts are absorbed by the Earth's "sinks", which include the oceans and the biosphere....

That is fucking depressing. I find myself responding to this sort of news depending on my mood. On a good day I think to myself - we've conquered polio, we've learned how to feed billions (when we can be bothered), we've gone to he moon and Mars, so we can do this too.

On other days I just feel we are fucked and fear for my kids.

Antarctica is also melting significantly faster than predicted.

A rational skeptic should be able to discuss and debate anything, no matter how much they may personally disagree with that point of view. Discussing a subject is not agreeing with it, but understanding it.

Maybe that's why the record temperatures that we are told about are so hard to actually feel.
In my part of the world, summers feel the same as they always did, and winters just the same too.
Ocean levels have risen a huge amount, even though you can't see it.

It's lucky that the IPCC is there to keep telling us, because otherwise, it would be easy to forget just how hot we are. :D

But of course, the evidence is everywhere. Australia is hot, and that's never happened before. Parts of California are hot and dry, especially Death Valley. And there are forest fires in damp freezing countries like Portugal.
This is scary stuff, the like of which the world has never seen the like of which.

Stop the planet, I need to get off !
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.
