Muslim parents' concern over gelatine in flu vaccine

A programme to vaccinate schoolchildren against flu has been delayed in Glasgow after concerns from Muslim parents that it contains products derived from pork.

About 100,000 primary school pupils in Scottish health board areas taking part in a pilot programme are being offered the Fluenz vaccine.

It is given as a nasal spray rather than the traditional jab.

But parents in Pollokshields, which has a high number of Muslim pupils, have complained the spray contains gelatine.

A letter sent to Glasgow schools in the wake of concerns cites a World Health Organisation study in 2001 which indicated that Islamic and Jewish scholars had agreed pork gelatine was permissible within a vaccine.

However, NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC), whose area contains most of Scotland's Muslims, said it had put back the rollout of the vaccinations "following concerns raised by a small number of parents".

I don't think it should be compulsory for anyone to have the vaccine, if they don't want it.

Depends on the science. If the best course of action is universal vaccination then fines should be used to enforce the vaccination programme. The needs of the many outweigh the needs of the few.

They've put back the rollout for everyone or just the swinophobes?

It is voluntary. There was no need to delay it, none at all. I fail to see the reasoning behind it.

It's to get as many children as possible, they don't want to go back again after the fuckwits have calmed down.

People should not be allowed to opt out of vaccination. To do so creates a reservoir for the disease to survive in. It is in the interests of the general public to have everyone vaccinated.

Yes, but disease is there to kill out the weaker members of the population, leaving the overall group stronger.

I meant the delay, there was no reasoning behind it. I live in the area and can guarantee you this is little to do with the Muslims around here and more to do with an ignorant pandering bunch of halfwits too scared to offend the handful of fucking zoomers, who are likely to complain about anything. I reckon you are talking less than 20 people complaining and what's more I could probably point them out. Fuck the NHS for its pandering to the insane minorities of our minorities.
