El-Asmar told agents that she “concealed the money for safety” and only declared $3300 at the border crossing because she did not want her boyfriend to know she was so flush.
This seems a reasonable reason to me. For that matter, one might be worried about corrupt customs agents and not with to declare cash to them for that reason.
But why would we believe her? Smugglers are sometimes known to lie about what they're smuggling. Shocking, I know, but it's true.

While having large amounts of cash out an airport on you may be legal, not giving a good reason as to why you are carrying it as certainly going to involve a trip down the police station to find out if you are involved in drug deals , money laundering etc.

It's bloody obvious why you would be required to declare in leaving/entering the country and anyone stupid enough to carry that much cash (whether they declare it or not) deserves everything they get
When only criminals carry guns the police know exactly who to shoot!

I don't think the it's a question of believing her or not believing her. She may be lying. The question is burden of proof, which is on the government. Does the government have any evidence that she's smuggling something illegal? If not, why take her $60,000? Money isn't illegal.

By your logic, every passenger is a smuggler, because we ought not believe any one of them.

There are few good reasons to try to get that amount of money into a country without the authorities knowing about it. Tax evasion, money laundering, drug deals, etc., are not good reasons.

She broke the law. She has to prove she didn't intend to do so if she wants a lighter sentence.

I need a good reason to have $60,000?

How about...it's my money and fuck you.

Is there duty on money? Tariff?

Is having money on you evidence of a crime?

It's not a strawman. Why should any passenger be believed any more or less than this lady?

Exactly, I don't believe any of them. Strawman.

Why would we care? It's not really smuggling to conceal cash, which isn't contraband.

If you don't declare something that is required to be declared, it's smuggling. The customs form has a slot for "how much cash do you have with you?"

That's the point.

It doesn't matter that none of them is to be believe. What does that have to do with anything? I wouldn't believe you either. That doesn't mean it ought to be a crime for you to carry cash on you.

That has been explained to the point where ever you should have understood it by now. :funny:

Smuggling is moving contraband. Cash is not contraband. It's just a failure to give the government information the government has no business knowing.

So you can ignore the laws you don't like? Say "hi" to Bubba when you get to Cell Block B.
