Dear Ask-a-nerd, feedback from microphone on PC.

Anything I can do about this? I've tried several mics and get feed back if I don't plug something into the headphone jack first.

Unless you get a very narrow-range, directional microphone, I don't think there's an easy cure (short of headphones). Most programs that use audio input (e.g. Skype) don't transmit the microphone input back out of the speakers while in operation, but if you're using something that immediately adds the microphone input to the audio output (and your mic is a normal one) you're going to need headphones.

Well TA is the forum audio nerd alright, but to state the obvious, you get feedback if your mic picks up too much of the sound coming out of your speakers. So logically if you can either turn the volume down or move the speakers away from the microphone so it can't pick up the sound they are making that should do it.

Soz if I am stating the obvious.

Thanks guys! I'll try turning off the speakers and testing it after Ayaan gets up. :tut:

Mai has a small mic at the Train Wreck and it worked fine, which motivated me to buy one for myself. :plot:

Now that I've plugged it in I don't hear feedback. Which is no fucking surprise as the speakers are off. :funny:

Depends what your usage is. If it's something you need, there are hard- and software feedback attenuators available. The software ones will depend on what you're doing. If you're recording, and your software is VST compliant (or some other plugin protocol, such as RTAS), then you can download free eliminator plugins at http://www.kvraudio.com. They work by sensing the dominant frequency of the feedback and introducing an out-of-phase mirror in real time. They're somewhat effective, and I've used them on occasion in critical live recoding situations when there's no chance of re-takes. They do take something away from the sound, but only something that a really well-trained ear would spot, and it's far preferable to feedback.

With a little skill, you can actually deal with it using a parametric equaliser. This does require that you know the core frequencies that are feeding but, once you know them, they're fairly easy to eliminate. Working out the frequency is fairly straightforward, as well, if you have a little musical know-how.

All you have to do is cut the frequency at which the feedback occurs, which can be worked out by playing the note of the feedback on a suitably tuned instrument. Set the 'Q' factor as narrow as possible while still catching all of it. You shouldn't have to attenuate by too much, probably only a dB or three.

I see your problem was solved, but I'd already typed the response, so fuck it.

Quick question. If the speakers are off, how am I supposed to hear the other person on Skype?

Yep, if I'm the only person in this room. I have 3-4 headphone/mic combos, but if Ayaan wants to hear the other person too, there's a problem.

Just keep the volume down or the speakers well away from the mic.
