Re: Global Climate Change Science News
That is about the sum of it for UK and the States but when will Russia, SE Asia and India get on board? Nevermind Africa. Without them getting our European house in order will make little impression on the problem.

Is Biden losing it?

‘This is our last chance’: Biden urged to act as climate agenda hangs by a thread
Failure to pass legislation to cut emissions before the UN summit in Glasgow could be catastrophic for efforts to curb global heating
With furious environmental activists at the gates of the White House, and congressional Democrats fretting that a priceless opportunity to tackle catastrophic global heating may be slipping away, Joe Biden is facing mounting pressure over a climate agenda that appears to be hanging by a thread.
Biden’s allies have warned that time is running perilously short, both politically and scientifically, for the US to enact sweeping measures to slash planet-heating emissions and spur other major countries to do the same. Failure to do so will escalate what scientists have said are “irreversible” climate impacts such as disastrous heatwaves, floods, wildfires and a mass upheaval of displaced people.

Amsterdam is not Friesland. So why the comparison?

Fernland's Chumocracy in action:
Environmentalists argue Peter Thiel’s luxury NZ lodge will ‘destroy’ lake landscape
Environmentalists argue Peter Thiel’s luxury NZ lodge will ‘destroy’ lake landscape
Almost as good as Johnson's Chumocracy.Billionaire PayPal co-founder is planning a luxury home on 190-hectare property on shores of Lake Wanaka
Billionaire Peter Thiel is facing opposition from New Zealand environmental groups over his plans to build a luxury lodge in Wānaka, an alpine town on the South Island.
A company owned by Thiel had lodged a consent application for a sprawling lodge on his property, which would include a “pod” for the owner himself, water features and meditation space. The consent describes “a series of stand-alone buildings, including a lodge for visitor accommodation for up to 24 guests, accommodation pod for the owner, together with associated lodge management buildings, infrastructure, landscape treatment, water features and meditation space”. The earthworks required to build it would cover over 73,700m² of land.
The lodge is not Thiel’s first taste of controversy in New Zealand. The billionaire co-founder of PayPal and Trump supporter was granted New Zealand citizenship despite spending only 12 days in the country, it was revealed in 2017.
Usual route to citizenship requires applicants to be in New Zealand as a permanent resident for at least 1,350 days in the five years preceding an application but the government waived the requirement for Thiel on the basis of his entrepreneurial and philanthropic activities. At the time, Thiel was seen as part of a broader cohort of super-rich investors who hoped to buy up remote New Zealand properties as hideaways for potential societal or environmental collapse.

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
The host of Cop26 needs to be a master of diplomacy. Unfortunately, it’s Boris Johnson
Andrew Rawnsley wrote:Having promised he could save the world, there’s very little time left to rescue this critical summit from failure
The Queen is not amused. “We only know about people who are not coming,” the monarch was overheard saying. “It is very irritating when they talk, but they don’t do.”
It is not the turnout for a Buck House party that is exasperating her, but the unanswered invitations to the Cop26 climate summit that will meet in Glasgow in November. With just a fortnight to go, it is still not clear whether the leaders of China, India or Russia will even turn up, never mind agree to do anything meaningful to address the climate crisis.
There is still just about time for one or more of them to send in a last-gasp RSVP, but their reluctance to engage is one of many anxieties for a host who has previously raised expectations that this summit will be a world-saving triumph. When Boris Johnson addressed the UN general assembly in September, he exported to the global stage the boosterism that is so familiar to his domestic audience. From the UN podium in New York, he declared that Cop26 would be “the turning point for humanity”.
That sounded like hyperbole unanchored from reality even as he said it. Someone with a better grasp of the geopolitics of the climate crisis and its fiendishly complex challenges would have used more tempered language. For many people, Cop26 is already doomed to let down the planet because no one ever had any serious expectation that this summit would agree to targets for cutting carbon emissions that are robust enough to prevent destructive levels of global warming. The more limited, but nevertheless critical, ambition for this gathering is to extract promises that would get the world closer to being on track to containing global warming to no more than 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. That was the goal set in the groundbreaking Paris climate deal in 2015.
