Because we aren’t going back and rediagnosing older people with the new criteria. And when older people are reevaluated, we do find more diagnosed.

If autism is genetic, then could you please name the gene?
I don’t know why, but it’s nutritionists & health coaches who really think they do something other than flex their lack of expertise when they say this.

Autism is highly heritable: It is estimated at least 50% of genetic risk is predicted by common genetic variation and another 15-20% is due to spontaneous mutations or predictable inheritance patterns. The remaining genetic risk is yet to be determined.

Apart from specific chromosomal disorders (like trisomy 21 or 18), most disorders are genetic that can't be linked to one specific gene (like schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, etc). Genetics are INCREDIBLY complex and as far as I know we've barely scratched the surface.

RFK Jr. doesn’t know what the term epidemic means.
An epidemic: a sudden increase in the number of cases of a disease above what is normally expected.
Generally this applies to communicable diseases, but certain types of non-communicable health issues can qualify.
Epidemics are:
Acute or rapid-onset in nature
Unusual in scale or spread
Often caused by transmissible or external factors
Increases public health burden
Requires collective measures to address

Autism rates have increased, but it’s not because more people are “getting autism.”
You’ve seen the Tweets and memes, right? Autism is skyrocketing!
Autism prevalence was 1 in 10,000 in the 1970s and now it’s 1 in 36.
It’s an epidemic, and it’s being driven by all the chemicals kids are exposed to, right?
It’s gotta be. No other explanation.
This is wrong. But the figures that manipulate reality are effective scare tactics.

“I think we'll have some preliminary answers in six months. It will take us probably a year from then before we can have definitive answers because a lot of the studies will not go out until the end of the summer.”

For the first time in decades, someone is asking the hard questions—and demanding real answers.

This time, nothing is off-limits.

Good to have some investigation. There has seemed to be a knee-jerk reaction to questions around it, while autism supports, diagnosis and incidence all seem to be spiking.

I guess I prefer investigation over dismissal.

For some, autism is an undesireable outcome. As someone who has been on a board of an autism NGO, I've seen more bits of the spectrum than most. It would be great to reduce incidence of the more isolating difficulties that can come with it.

Fun fact: if your youngster is having trouble toileting, try introducing a bidet. While fairly uncommon in North America, they can be a very supportive alternative for someone who hates the feel of tissue paper, but doesn't know how to tell you. (learned that from a young woman at a conference, who had been helped that way)
