But I did eventually pluck up courage to fly, allowing me to visit NZ a few years back when David and Clare were working there. I quite enjoyed it...

4¼ hours of boredom. I could not find a movie worth watching, but the plane's collection of audiobooks came to the rescue. I finished up dipping into A Briefer History of Time by Hawking and Mlodinow. Interesting, and quite funny in places.

Takeoffs, landings and the banking turns they involve are OK, though. Here is a takeoff from Adelaide on the way to Brisbane.



The landing took place during a brief break between two floods. The plane hit a few minor air pockets on the way down.



I did not catch a flight until I was 20, or thereabouts. Best flight ever. The plane was a Fokker Friendship. The combination of the acceleration pushing me back into the seat and the roar of the turboprops on takeoff gave me goosebumps. It all seems less exciting in jet engined planes.
