Artificial Intelligence

Post by Tero » Fri Feb 26, 2021 7:10 pm

I've been looking at the brain books at the book store and on line. I really don't follow these sort of things well, but the one book related to the brain:

It's not 400 pages, and has some illustrations and is quite readable.

Later. But anyway I started thinking about this problem solving and "intelligence." I remember solving a colored cube puzzle in computer science. I could easily write a program in Basic to play chess. It would need some coaching on what the king is, but other than that, it would be easy to move pieces and even decide. I put up a really stupid chess problem just to demonstrate it.

The computer is white and faced with this board. I would then program it to take the bishop.

Since my program is basically an idiot, it would just move pieces back and forth, rather than plan an attack. It would move the right bishop in and out. Or the knight back to the square by the queen. But now it has to think. It would value taking the opponent's piece. So I would program it to always take a piece, whether my attacking bishop is safe in that spot or not. So it would select from the two bishops and two knights and run through all the moves. It would then use the first move that would take the black bishop. Since I have it select moves going through the pieces one by one left to right. It would then pick the knight taking the black bishop. Or perhaps the bishop. it would need to decide in a situation like that by "flipping the coin."

I believe evaluation has always been the big problem for chess playing programs. Just counting material --flawlessly-- puts the computer above the average player. Do that same simple calculation for enough positions, and far enough ahead, and what's left for intuition to do anyway? But assuming there are real constraints to looking ahead, how might you improve your score?

That seems to be the human's problem /intelligence ?/ anyway.

Well, as far as playing chess, it took me about 10 years to check the opponent's knight at every move. My dad played me and he would put some pieces in a fork situation and even if I moved my bishop away, he would take a pawn with the knight in a "fork" situation. After I learned never to allow that, I became a strictly defensive player. He on the other hand had made most things very routine, as by 1960 he had played thousands and thousands of games. He was poor in youth but had good chess opponents from school.

Lex Fridman Podcast covers AI quite often. You might want to avoid the upsetting topics or interview subjects, but he gets a lot of interesting folks on his show.

It is actually quite easy. A woman has at least one X chromosome.

Who didn't enjoy seeing the fork for the first time, especially when it involved royalty? But the machine can just check a record in a table for a given position and it's "seen" the fork.

This gives us results in terms of outcomes akin to intelligence, but it doesn't give me the impression of having captured a real sense of intelligence. The experts distinguish between the two senses, I think they call them goals, one being like the chess player, the other something to do with operating in many contexts using a general intelligence.

Dennett has a funny essay about some of these issues: "COGNITIVE WHEELS: THE FRAME PROBLEM OF AI DANIEL C. DENNETT"

Well it was not supposed to show intelligence, other than identify such fork situations.

But back to the supposed program. It would just be a set of tables. The computer would start off with simple moves of the pawns. Each time it would wait for the "player" to type out his move, then print out all the squares with new content. It would not (at this point) know its goal. It would just keep moving after each of the opponent's moves.

The mate situation would be more work to put in. It would be cool to get to the point where it knows the game has ended.

Sounds like you're having fun. If you have a king table then 0 legal moves + check is mate.

This may not be strictly within the AI sphere, but might come in handy if/when AI comes into existence. For the AI, I mean.

Yes Jim. AI athletic robots are doing a very good job in very difficult circumstances. I applaud them with applause.

I'd rather have sex robot overlords, but I'll settle for athletic ones if that's what's available. :dunno:

Anyway, when so many supposed humans fail to pass the Turing test, I guess that actual AI has a loooong way to go.
