1 pound of cheese requires 600 gallons of water. On average it requires 1.2 gallons of milk to make 1 pound of cheese.

1 pound of pork requires 576 gallons of water.

1 pound of rice requires 449 gallons of water.

1 pound of corn requires 108 gallons of water.

1 pound of soybeans requires 216 gallons of water.

1 pound of potatoes requires 119 gallons of water.

Another article, but with some proper units of measurement.

I believe that in the not so far future, we will be able to create virtual animals. That is machines in a factory (having at their core maybe cell cultures / bacteria or not) that can create matter similar to meat / milk from plant input. Instead of feeding grass to cows, we just take it to the factory and the factory produces meat and milk for human consumption. Maybe there can even be machines that just take in water some chemicals, carbon dioxide from the atmosphere and energy to work without needing farmland.

No more worry about animal suffering. And probably a lot more efficiency creating fewer emissions for producing the same amount of calories.

Lab meat is a thing already. It will be a part of our lives in the not too distant future.

We would need photosynthesis to make the carbs, protein and fats, I expect. Forests and meadows have their own charm over factories, but that's just my opinion.

You need animal dung to manure fields. With livestock farming gone or heavily reduced there isn't enough left. We'll have to collect human feces and take them to the food factories as input for the process. Meadows aren't so nice when human shit is spread over them.

(soylent green is people's shit)

Also, our factories will be much more efficient than plants or trees. Some of our current agricultural land might be turned into factories. But a lot can be turned into wild meadows, helping preserve biodiversity, bind much more carbon dioxide and just be enjoyable.

ESA BIC Finland start-up Solar Foods will revolutionize food production with a method that is not dependent on agriculture, the weather, or the climate, producing protein out of air and electricity. Prime target is for sustainable food generation on Earth, but could also be used for Mars missions.
The method is able to produce sustainable and pure single-cell protein from CO2 using electricity, requiring only carbon dioxide, water and electricity, combined with a small amount of trace elements.

The unit cost of vat meat is prohibitively high at the moment, but then again you can already spend $2000 on a burger if you have the of spare change.

I'm hoping that humans will be able to use solar charging instead of eating food. When you feel peckish, you reach for your cellphone and plug in.

More like "team stupid", Google "David Cross + eating gold".

On meat, I've learned to cook the perfect steak, and I gotta say you can live without it. This semester I have a goal to eat only veg/fruit/fish. I figure one semester is doable.

So them fish you can eat because they lived happy lives, unlike our caged chickens? We have a Costco chicken factory going up in the next county. We need them chicken to convert inedible GMO soybean to protein.

I'm not a costco member.
