Soccer, or Sockball, was a game played in private schools with a ball literally made out of socks. Rugger had a similar historical root in the private school system, where informal house teams would attempt to carry a large carpet - typically stolen for the purpose from the Masters' common room - thrice round the quad and returned to its proper place while avoiding discovery and an inevitable sound thrashing.
