Re: Trackless Trams
Very interesting. I can see drawbacks. We have light rail that runs on city tram tracks here in the Hague and uses the metro system in Rotterdam. In between it uses dedicated track. No roads involved. I dont where he got those prices though. Light rail is very near cost of the ART track and also it uses track that is already laid.

Maybe a combination could be made. ART and train wheels but that is asking. I cant see it fitting in here. Our trams have almost 90% dedicated tracks so the benefit would be minimal with extra maintenance costs.

Interesting. Nick just finished his Master's thesis on the issue of how best to make it easier for people to use our train and tram network, by improving connections with the bus network, as well as making it easier to cycle to a train station...

Re: Trackless Trams
As is mentioned in the article buses are inefficient in comparison to trams. In Utrecht they made dedicated roads for three sectioned buses which can take up to two hundred passengers. This is to the Utrecht university campus at the Uithof outside the city.
But analyses has proveen them not as efficient as light rail and are being replaced by these:
Trackless would be of not point as it has a totally dedicated track.
Needless to say there is already a more than adequate cycle infrastructure in place. Utrecht will have the biggest cycle parking in the world next year with space for more than 12,500 bikes.
It is almost complete and next year it will be totally opened. This is part of the total redevelopment of the centre of Utrecht.

Re: Trackless Trams
Might be a good interim solution, or maybe to test alternative routes during planning?
Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.

Can you put tracks and skis on it? We have a tourism boom at the moment, but things like the aurora borealis are fickle, as are the hordes of people willing to pay money to photograph them.

Re: Trackless Trams
Is it linked into other transport systems? How do the tickets work? We have one ticket for the whole country and for all transport systems.
Integration is important.

Yes, there's a single electronic "ticket" for all forms of public transport. The links between buses, trains and trams are there, but could be better - my son's Master's thesis identified some of the shortcomings.Scot Dutchy wrote: ↑Mon Oct 08, 2018 7:28 amIs it linked into other transport systems? Every system has short comings but the art is to choose the best one.

Re: Trackless Trams
i have a system that is completely integrated into my life. No tickets, no scheduled routes, no peak or off hours, no waiting, works both on and off-road, will carry 4 people in air conditioned comfort, up to 3/4 tons of cargo, and you can hook a cargo module to it for another 5 tons. It's called a Nissan Titan.
