My explanation must have sucked. I'm sure you've all seen (and possibly done) the experiment where you sit on a swivel chair and spin a bike tyre while holding it at its axle. As you rotate the axis longitudinally it applies this force to you, and you and the chair will begin rotating in one direction. If you rotate the axis the other way, you will spin back the other way.
