Hello Pluto

Post by mistermack » Tue Jul 14, 2015 1:25 pm

The New Horizons probe is now in close range of Pluto, and will be sending back some good stuff before long, if everything works.
Pluto is a shitload of miles from the Earth. The probe was launched at a record velocity, nearly ten years ago, and got a gravity assist of an extra 9,000 mph off Jupiter on the way so it's going at a fair old rate now.

Pluto is about 32 times as far from the Sun as we are. So it's not going to be getting much heat off it. And it's fairly big.
If you viewed it alongside the moon, the moon would look about fifty percent wider. So it's a substantial lump, even if they have demoted it from planetary status.

Since it only takes ten years to get there, I would imagine that in a thousand years time, there will be people on it.
While there is a market for shit, there will be assholes to supply it.

No, the epidemic will not reach all remote areas. Shepherds and occasional farming with horses will take us another 5000 years. But the shepherds better grab the last women before the epidemic kills them. But yes, in 1000 years nobody will remember a Pluto.

Look on the bright side, some of our descendants may be around!

Still waiting for the photos. :toetap:
The most recent one is two days old - a day before closest approach and still 700,000 km to go.
Although it may look like a forum, this site is actually a crowd-sourced science project modelling the slow but inexorable heat death of the universe.

Transmission of the data New Horizon has collected will take 16 months. My advice is that you don't try to hold your breath waiting for the photos that are among them.

Yes, for the full download, so I've read, but they have managed one new photo a day during the approach, so one photo from the actual closest approach mightn't be too much to ask. :lay:
