Could contain bacteria which could survive under lunar conditions, multiply and mutate.

Did they not think this one through?

It won't be long until something like this comes back:

I think that there's not much chance of bacteria multiplying, or reproducing, at lunar temperatures.
That is, if they left them in the shade. It would be easy enough to cover the waste with foil to reflect the sunlight, which would mean that the chances of a bacterium reproducing would be virtually nil.
And of course, they would have to survive the constant bombardment with cosmic rays.
I would have thought it would all be perfectly sterile by now.

Anyway, I would have devised a system to bring it back for study. Maybe they did do that, with some of it.
Or jettison it just as the module re-enters the Earth atmosphere, so that it burns up.

Bacteria can survive at lunar temperatures, indeed even in space.

You're probably right, but what has that to do with the topic?

This is what the Chinese Jade Rabbit rover is after, Neil Armstrong's frozen droppings. Probably to clone home or something.

Weren't the Apollo 11 crew quarantined because of possible contamination by lunar microbes? :nervous:

Yeh, but there's no chance of them reproducing, or multiplying, at those temperatures.

To evolve, you need lots of generations. No reproduction, no evolution.

They ejected their doings from the Command Module en-route. So, given the relative velocities and angular momentums, depending on exactly when they ejected it, some of it probably hit the moon - making new craters - and some of it is probably halfway to Uranus by now, and will probably hit some poor space tourist on the back of the helmet some time around 2347
