If Bacillus anthracisis is being weaponized, the lab would contain delivery technology like artillery shells, aircraft mountable sprayers, cluster bombs and they like. A vaccine research lab would have none of that, but would have animals for testing, syringes, vials, and more a specialist could spot in both types of labs. I'm a layman and yet I know this, and I'm sure I'm not alone in my knowledge on this forum.

I found a lot of information on Wikipedia, including an 1863 letter to the editor of the New York Times that it says is the first known use of the term "conspiracy theory," but curated feeds like Wikipedia and the NYT can't be trusted either.

It's a rather loose term these days - there doesn't even have to be a 'conspiracy' to explain the supposed connection between two or more disparate bits of info. The conspiracy theory is essentially a form of magical thinking, a filling-in of the blanks with imagined possibilities, and in which a claim to knowledge is asserted in circumstances where the absence of empirical support is cited in justification.

The phrase 'conspiracy theorist' was the one I checked (not 'conspiracy theory'). I heard a rumor that it was created in response to curiosity around the JFK assassination, but the term shows up in the ngrams earlier, but that IS kind of an odd coincidence, that it shows first within a few years.

It also happens that the government, after promising to release all the info, still needs to protect something in it after 60 years. Does noticing that they are dishonest fucks make you a conspiracy theorist? Or just normal?

The thing with conspiracy theories is that sometimes there really is a conspiracy.

In fact, this is a regular occurance in law when criminal conspiracies are prosecuted. The prosecutor will present a theory of the case to the jury outlining how the defendant(s) illegally conspired to break the law. Conviction or acquital depends on the strength of the prosecutor's arguments against the strength of the defense attorney's counter arguments in support of an opposing theory of the case.

In the purest sense of the term, these lawyers are conspiracy theorists, but I wouldn't say that to one's face. That's because the egregious behavior of some conspiracy theorists and the specious nature of their theories has given the term a bad name.

Alex Jones and his Sandy Hook conspiracy theory is the formost example.

So what separates the ordinary person with a theory of the case from the wild-eyed nutter? After all, both present arguments and evidence to support them. Let's start with a favorite quote from Sherlock Holmes, “It is a capital mistake to theorize before one has data. Insensibly one begins to twist facts to suit theories, instead of theories to suit facts.” To my thinking, this is one major distinguishing characteristic - the twisting of facts to fit the theory.

I even provided my own example of the phenomenon up-thread, though I was just making a funny.

That just proves they were in on it.

It's far more likely that the term originated for some other reason (twisting the theory) than a premeditated coverup three years before the report was published (twisting the facts). But that's done all the time.
