well, if the cup had been named in Beatrix' or Juliana's name, you'd be... and if it was me, the olympics would be either totally abolished, or given back to the Greek Pagans to restore to what they should never have stopped being, exhibitions by unpaid amateurs, in Olympia.

Men only, and they competed in the nude. This could not happen today. Where would the sponsors pin their brand logos?

The original Olympic games also included poetry readings and the performance of plays. "The winner of the 18-stanza Iambic Pentameter event is..." Today it would be RapperD versus DJfuck and Game of Thrones versus Emmerdale.
So you talk about mobs and the working classes as if they were the question. You've got that eternal idiotic idea that if anarchy came it would come from the poor. Why should it? frack the sponsors, if there were any in Ancient Greece, they found way to make themselves know without tattooing their mark on the athlete. and theater and poetry need the kick up anyway.

The true facts about climbing Everest.

‘Walking over bodies’: mountaineers describe carnage on Everest
Death toll grows on world’s highest summit as climbers face challenging conditions

An experienced mountaineer has described the “death, carnage and chaos” at the top of Mount Everest as climbers pushed past bodies to reach the world’s highest summit.

The death toll on the mountain grew to 11 in the past day after an American doctor was killed while descending from the peak. It emerged also that an Australian climber was discovered unconscious but had survived after being transported downhill on the back of a yak.

Elia Saikaly, a film-maker, reached Hillary Step, the final stage before the summit, on the morning of 23 May, where he said the sunrise revealed the lifeless body of another climber. With little choice at that altitude but to keep moving, his team – including Joyce Azzam, the first Lebanese woman to climb the world’s “Seven Summits” – made it to the peak a short time later.

“I cannot believe what I saw up there,” Saikaly said of the last hours of his climb in a post on Instagram. “Death. Carnage. Chaos. Lineups. Dead bodies on the route and in tents at camp 4. People who I tried to turn back who ended up dying. People being dragged down. Walking over bodies. Everything you read in the sensational headlines all played out on our summit night.”
Climbing should be banned. It is also an environmental disaster as well.

The Monarch butterfly's circadian clock is in its antennae. They form part of a "time-compensated sun compass" which is how the north eastern US Monarchs make it deep into Mexico during their migration.

Now, the antennae work independently of each other. If you remove an antenna, the remaining antenna is sufficient to maintain navigation. But if you just mask 1 antenna, the navigation system fails.

So:

2 accurate antennae = fine.
1 accurate antenna = fine.
1 accurate antenna and 1 inaccurate antenna = failure.

I always wondered how Lenin financed his comfortable exile years, now we know! :funny:
DENMARK: NEW DOCUMENTS REVEAL LENIN WAS A GERMAN AGENT

Copenhagen| Construction workers working on the renovation of the basement of an old warehouse in the Danish capital, have discovered many boxes of documents dating from 1917 and 1918, that allegedly confirm that Vladimir Ilyich Ulyanov, better known as Lenin, would have been for many years an active agent of the German Secret Service. The files are linked to the Handels og-Eksport Kompagniet, an import-export company that was used as a front organization by the Bolsheviks before and during the revolution, and which presumably served to enable the transfer of German funds, weapons and supplies to the Bolsheviks.

The workers were attempting to consolidate a heavily damaged brick wall in the basement of an 19th century warehouse situated at the 73 Amaliegade, in the district of Frederiksstaden, when they noticed a hidden room behind the brick, holding a large safe. Expert locksmiths intervened to open the safe, and revealed 20 000 Imperial German Reichsmarks, as well as thousands of documents linked to the former shipping company and the Imperial German Secret Service.

Realizing the possible historical value of their find, the workers contacted the archaeology department of the Aarhus Universitet, handing them the documents for research and preservation purposes. A team of specialists directed by Professor Arnbjørn Sørensen, has read and analyzed the various papers and were astounded to realize that they dealt with Lenin and the Russian revolution.
All in all, a total of 32 537 different pieces of archive linked to the company were found on the site, including cargo and conveyance data, financial records, legal permits, business contracts and navigation logbooks. It is however the 321 documents linked to the German secret operations that have attracted by far the most attention.

Most of these papers carry orders emerging from German ambassador Hans Freiherr von Wangenheim, and are destined to two Russian agents codenamed “der Bankier” (the banker) and “Maulwurf” (the mole), which have been identified respectively as Alexander Parvus and Vladimir Lenin. According to these documents, Parvus would have served as Lenin’s liaison officer, transmitting him the orders and the material that came from the Germans through Jakob Fürstenberg, Lenin’s most trusted agent who was also known by various aliases such as Hanecki, Kuba, or his Party name, Ganetsky.

An elaborate account of a meeting that took place between the Bolshevik leader, Parvus and Baron von Wangenheim on April 13 1917, during Lenin’s stopover in Stockholm, provides an incredible new perspective on the October revolution, as it now seems clear that the action was planned by the German military. The three men discuss the events to come and plan their course of action. The obvious aim of the operation was to disintegrate Russian resistance during the First World War by spreading revolutionary unrest. The documents show that Lenin was in fact an agent part of an elaborate three-point proposal: the infiltration of Bolshevik propaganda into Russia; an international press campaign against Czarism; organizing massive strikes under the slogan “Freedom and Peace.”

Several contemporary politicians had already alleged that Lenin worked for Germany, but without presenting any solid proof. Aleksandr Kerensky, Grigory Aleksinsky, and other Russian political opponents, had already accused the Bolsheviks, especially Lenin—of being Imperial German agents provocateurs, but presenting forged and inconclusive evidence. British prime minister Winston Churchill had also blamed the Germans for the the rise to power of the Bolsheviks, writing “They transported Lenin in a sealed truck like a plague bacillus from Switzerland into Russia“.

All the tests and analysis realized until now on the files and their content, have confirmed their authenticity and legitimacy. These new documents can therefore be considered as irrefutable proofs of Lenin’s link with the German Secret Service and the complicity of the German military in the Bolshevik revolution. Professor Sørensen says he is conscious that these new facts will certainly create some controversy, but that that they are “too important historically to be ignored”.

Via the World News Daily Report, no less. :hilarious:
World News Daily Report assumes all responsibility for the satirical nature of its articles and for the fictional nature of their content. All characters appearing in the articles in this website – even those based on real people – are entirely fictional and any resemblance between them and any person, living, dead or undead, is purely a miracle.
It's been common knowledge that Germany spent millions of Reichmarks on the Bolsheviks, especially after the Kerensky government that followed the Tsar's toppling during the February revolution utterly refused to end the war. Lenin would have received part of it. He even had an entire train at his disposal for nine days as he and his team were conveyed from Switzerland to St. Petersburg. The bulk of the journey involved crossing germany from its southern to the northern border. The time-honoured principle of "the enemy of my enemy..." kind of thing.

I know it is satire, but there is a grain of truth in it. Really, how did these professional revolutionaries finance their years abroad?
