That depends on the species, and the ambient temperature of their usual environment. But the difference in density between blubber and water is very slight, and is counterbalanced by the weight of bone and muscle.
The sperm whale can make itself more dense than water, when it wants to dive, and less dense, when it wants to surface.

If the blubber was as light as you seem to think, they wouldn't be able to dive at all.

I've read reports of young girls having hairballs much heavier than four pounds removed. ( nowhere near basketball size ).

Young girls don't have the same internal configuration as a tiger. Tigers are a lot bigger, for one- which might lead to fluffier hairballs.

You might be right. Just like you, I'm only guessing.
Tigers never live to 17 in the wild, so it's probably not a common problem.

Maybe basketballs aren't as big as I remember them. I was at school, the last time I held one. I've grown a bit since then.
