Why are there so few prisoners in the Netherlands?
The Dutch justice system is cutting jail populations by offering specialist rehabilitation to people with mental illnesses

When Stefan Koning, who has a history of psychosis, was found guilty of threatening a stranger with a knife, a long custodial sentence might have felt like the only answer.

In fact, after a short spell in jail, he is back at his home in Amsterdam.

“Bob is a character from Twin Peaks, a murderer who creeps into the skin of innocent people and makes them do terrible things like murder,” says Koning. “There’s a Bob in me who says ‘kill this person’, that sort of thing. If I take my medicines, Bob is quiet.”

Koning is a beneficiary of a growing tendency in the Netherlands to avoid jailing people unless it is necessary. One key aspect of this is a prodigious programme of care in the community for people with psychiatric problems.

“We work on two aims: number one, preventing another crime, and then on psychiatric suffering and the social problems that come with it,” says Hommo Folkerts, a forensic psychologist and outreach worker who helps Koning.

well, beside the fact we may be lacking in personnel and institutions for adequate mental care, that's something France might pick a clue from, our prisons are deplorably overpopulated...

Like everything you must start early. This process was started in the 1960's. Like many things here there were people with great foresight but they were allowed to act upon it. The '60's here were the high point of our version of Northern European Social Democracy. Luckily though many of the plans laid down then have been carried out. Our infrastructure, health service, education and prison reform are examples . Proof once again that coalition governments do work and that two party systems wreck countries. Our politics does not lurch from left to right but stays reasonably in the middle which gives stability.

Amsterdam to buy out young people's debt to offer 'new start'
City’s municipal credit bank will cancel some debt if young adults engage with training schemes

The city of Amsterdam is taking over the debts of its young adults as part of a drive to liberate people who are struggling to get into work or education.

A growth in borrowing among young Dutch adults – a trend echoed elsewhere in Europe, including the UK – is said to be standing in the way of them joining the marketplace or completing higher education courses.

Under the city’s trial project, a municipal credit bank will negotiate with creditors to buy out the debts. Those on the scheme will then be issued with a loan to repay according to their means.

The creditors will be given €750 as an incentive to pass the debt on to the municipality’s bank. The young people will have more of the debt cancelled if they successfully engage in training or an educational programme.

Yesterday was Space Research Day. I came across this pic of the first 11 cosmonauts. Gagarin was 1.57, the last ones must be at least 10 cm shorter. Imagine the mental stamina they possessed! Gagarin came first among ca 4000 candidates on account of many mental parametres.

what's amazing is that Valentina made the cut, and was apparently the only woman to do so.

Small buggers. My wife is 1,57m. The Soviets used one size space suits with separate limbs of difference sizes. The Americans had personally tailored ones. A bit like the special space pen and pencil story. That pragmatism is still keeping the ISS up there.

What is bullshit is you effectively claiming that journalists having opinions that you disagree with is much worse than a global trend to block reporting by a free press...
The global trend is for your favourite talking heads to avoid reporting on the media smears - because they would have to ruin themselves.

Look at how the ABC responded to the release of 'hot mic' chat where it was put plainly that they hid pedophilia for the wealthy.

Totally agree. Sewer outlets like the Fox channel will broadcast any rumour or outright lie. Being able to substantiate a story is unnecessary. Supporting its rabidly right wing bias is sufficient to qualify it ass fit for broadcasting. ABC is classier than that. No matter how tempting it might be to increase ratings, and advertising revenue with it, by publishing a sensationally salacious story about sex crimes committed by celebrities, it insists that this must not be done until its reporting standards, that is the ability to substantiate every allegation therein, are met. Brickbats for Fox. Kudos for ABC.

After Amy Robchar had regained her composure she was able to see reason once again. In a statement she wrote: "I was upset that an important interview I had conducted with Virginia Roberts didn’t air because we could not obtain sufficient corroborating evidence to meet ABC’s editorial standards about her allegations." and "The interview itself, while I was disappointed it didn’t air, didn’t meet our standards. In the years since no one ever told me or the team to stop reporting on Jeffrey Epstein, and we have continued to aggressively pursue this important story."

Trumpists will of course not mention Robach's clarification. It contradicts their bias. It also reveals their claim about the ABC hiding the story to be an outright lie. I can't say their behaviour surprises me. It's what they have always done, and there is no sign that they might suffer from an attack of honesty any time soon.

I heard the released 'hot mic' recording, and her later backpedaling doesn't make me think better of ABC's decision to pursue the 'leaker', nor the 'competing' networks decision to back up ABC by firing a suspect.

But those don't matter as much as the fact that NONE of the big investigators have looked into the story in a convincing way.

If you haven't heard Weinstein's podcast about his dealing with Epstein, or some of the other connected stories, I can understand you accepting the 'Robichar Backpedal' as sufficient explanation.

But geez...shouldn't folks like Bill Gates be forced to answer why they still hung out and flew around with him after his conviction?

Fake news. The "space pen" was developed by a private individual and both Russian and American space programs use it to this day. Pencils were dangerous in the then pure oxygen atmosphere on spacecraft. Graphite and wood are flammable, and graphite is also conductive. You don't want a broken piece of graphite floating about in zero gravity and potentially causing a short circuit. NASA used mechanical pencils prior to the development of the pen.

Yeah well that's just, like, your opinion, man.
