This story is a few years old, but I'd never heard of it before:
http://www.trendhunter.com/trends/japan ... s-qr-codes
QR Codes Give Info On Deceased
QR codes are all the rage in Japan, and now they are making their way into the graves! For those who do not know what they mean, QR "Quick Response" Code is a matrix code created by Japanese corporation Denso-Wave in 1994 that can be turned into web links and are currently the most popular Japanese type of two dimensional code.
Memorial stone maker Ishinokoe of Yamanashi Prefecture is adopting the technology and will soon begin producing grave stones with embedded QR codes that visitors can scan with their mobiles to get back information on the deceased. The retrieved content includes pictures, video, family information, and other items. The concept is being called Kuyou no Mado, meaning “Memorial Service Window.â€
Check out the somewhat similar idea of retrieving info by scanning pictures with your mobile that was recently trial launched by vodafone in Germany:
The Chinese have now taken up the idea:

Most smart phones can do it, or so I've heard.
Guess who doesn't yet own a smart phone, and is unable to interface with the spirits of his ancestors?

You download an app for your smartphone, take a picture of the QR code, then it automatically gives you the web page with the info.

You use an app* on the smart phone/tablet, which in turn uses a camera** on the device to photograph the code, which the app then deciphers***.
*Invariably free
**If your device has both front- and rear-facing cameras, I guess it would use the front one.
***It may do more than just decipher it. You can use QR codes to "do stuff", like make orders, etc.

Just looking for a tested app if anybody can recommend one. And do I have to start the app before I take the picture or what?

My understanding is that you use the app to take the photo, although I could be wrong.

QR Droid works fine for me. You do need to start the app before taking the pic. You can even use the app to make your own QR code. For the fuck what, I don't know.

I have hundreds of documents to be digitized. I've been thinking about printing the cataloging information on the back of the first page so I can tell when I did the file, what name it was saved under, etc. These files all have to go back to the Naval History and Heritage Command eventually and I'd like to make it easier on them when it comes time to archive the hard copies.

I guess you'd have to have some way to print the QR code on the page. Not sure what that'd entail. Never had any use for that sort of thing. But if you did do it, I can see how that would help out the NH&HC.
