Dead Bodies Everywhere

Post by Animavore » Tue Mar 03, 2009 10:03 pm

I finally got to see the Bodies exhibit in Dublin today and my opinion of it was meh.

I don't think it was worth €20, I think €12.50 would've been a more fair price, the exhibit isn't terribly big and you can see everything in half an hour and that's even having a good gander.
Although the bodies on display were pretty awesome, especially the respiratory system and the foetuses at varying stages of development, I was sad not to see details of the eyes and ear or the genitalia. I was also not happy with the fact I wasn't allowed to touch the bodies because I really wanted to interact, y'know stick my fingers into all the holes and have a good root around. I also would've liked to have seen some victims of trauma, like a gunshot wound to the face, a knife wound to the chest or someone run down by a lorry.
Not to say there wasn't some cool stuff like bodies in slices or half a head just lying there but, it wasn't spectacular. The Ambassador is to small a venue for it, the one on Casino Royale looked much bigger with a lot more displays.

It sounds as if the Mutter Museum here in Philly would be right up your street.

Won't go there myself, way too squeamish.
It's a piece of piss to be cowiz, but it's not cowiz to be a piece of piss. Or something like that.

Animavore, There's an anatomy museum in the University of Glasgow that you'd probably find interesting as well. If you want I'll make a point of going to it sometime next week and take a few pictures to post here.

What is it you find interesting about corpses? Is it just the whole reflection on mortality/morbid curiosity or is there a more elaborate reason?

Probably a less elaborate reason. I just like the gore of it, the evisceration. I like looking at how fragile the human body is and being reminded how fast people can just be wiped out. It reminds me that I myself am just a piece of meat and that my own life is not to be taken for granted.
If things had've been different in my life I would've quite liked to be a pathologist. It's a shame I had no intellectual influences in my life to get me into these things. It's only since I was 25-6 I took up a real interest in science and started ditching all the woo I believed in (mostly supernatural and paranormal stuff as well as UFOs but never, strangely, god).
Oh well. If I ever have kids they'll be taught what I know now and hopefully go a little further.

That actually sounds more like what I would've expected the Bodies exhibit to be.

Do you want me to go and get some pics?

I've been there two times in the past and could probably do with going back again. I need ways of filling up my spare time.

Nah you don't have to go do that on my account. I wouldn't put anyone out of their way.

We'll see what happens, the Uni isn't far from my home and I do find most aspects of science interesting so it's not like I wouldn't be getting anything from it.

Ok. Cool. I would appreciate it. I do find the whole anatomy thing interesting. Have your ever seen Life or Death on Channel 4 by the same bloke that created the Bodies exhibit were he does a live autopsy on T.V.?

How about a church burned to the ground, with 50-60 people locked inside?
