Today I walked out of my job as a science teacher. Behavior is totally out of control. I spent more time on classroom behavior than I did on teaching science.

I’m sympathetic. If you teach at a tough school and your expectation is to meet a bunch of kids eager to learn, you’re going to be miserable. That’s why my expectation is to crack the mystery of the knuckleheads, both in my class, and running the show… :tea:

Because there was a shortage of people qualified to teach senior physics and maths in the second half of my long career at my school, I was able to mostly teach senior classes, with students who were interested and had chosen the subject willingly, plus a Year 9 Advanced maths class full of high achievers. I am certainly cognisant of the fact that I had it relatively easy...

Science news of the day thread.

Oh yeah, two different worlds. But I bet they’re equally rewarding with the right mindset. I should add that my kids want the same things. They want to do well, to be seen as smart, to contribute from their intellect etc. It’s just that there are many more barriers to the expression of those desires in their case. The mystery to be solved then is how to lessen the influence of those barriers and get them growing again.

I think what you are trying to do is very valuable, Sean. Best of luck!

I bet you 50p that smaller classes would make a real and significant difference.
