Is the moon necessary for life?
Is the moon necessary for life?
Biologically speaking-- it seems like a useless piece of junk, really. I mean, life doesn't actually need a moonlight, right?

Not necessary, but it's tidal effects must have had a profound influence on the evolution of marine life, and the existence of an intertidal zone may have assisted the evolution of terrestial life...Dory wrote:Biologically speaking-- it seems like a useless piece of junk, really. Okay, it may (or must have according to you) had an evolutionary significant effect, but NOW, in this day and age, if we got rid of it....we'd still be perfectly fine right?

I'm sure we'd be fine, but, why? You aren't planning anything...er...drastic, are you? Is it obstructing your view? I mean, are you gonna pull a Marvin the Martian and blow it up or something?Dory wrote:

People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.
But those letters are not silent.
They're just waiting their turn.

And it's still important to certain lifeforms that use it to determine their breeding cycle. The leatherback tortoise lays it's eggs just above the highest tide mark so the eggs won't drown, for example. And most harbors in the world would be cesspools if the tides didn't flush them out regularly.JimC wrote:Not necessary, but it's tidal effects must have had a profound influence on the evolution of marine life, and the existence of an intertidal zone may have assisted the evolution of terrestial life...Dory wrote:Biologically speaking-- it seems like a useless piece of junk, really. LOL! No, I was just playing devil's advocate to get my point across to get a clear answer. Nothing sinister going on here... move along...tattuchu wrote:I'm sure we'd be fine, but, why? If we got rid of the Moon, we'd screw up astrology, the living of so many people, we cannot afford that, not in times of severe financial crisis!

Had the Moon never of existed then life on Earth would have just evolved differenty. If the Moon was suddenly removed right now then I think it would fuck up a lot of the natural world, but on the bright side, no more lycanthropes.

Apart of the tidal effect, hove you never noticed how many terrestrial anymals have circadian cycles that follow the lunar cycles? (the women will get my point at once)

Getting a point sometimes interrupts that cycle.Svartalf wrote:Apart of the tidal effect, hove you never noticed how many terrestrial anymals have circadian cycles that follow the lunar cycles? (the women will get my point at once)

I think I understand. Only partly. Not sure. Ambiguous.Svartalf wrote:Apart of the tidal effect, hove you never noticed how many terrestrial anymals have circadian cycles that follow the lunar cycles? (the women will get my point at once)
