Toxic and oxygen-starved oceans caused mass extinction 200 million years ago
Two hundred million years ago, half of all plant, animal and marine life became extinct, and evidence shows that oxygen-depleted toxic oceans played a key role, researchers from the US, UK, Australia and Canada reported this week.
The scientists’ findings, which have been published in the academic journal Geology (citation below), show that a condition called ‘marine photic zone euxinia’ occurred in the Panathalassic Ocean, the larger of the two oceans that surrounded Pangaea, the supercontinent.
Photic zone euxinia occurs when the surface of the ocean, the part that is lit by sunlight, lacks oxygen and becomes poisoned with hydrogen sulphide (US spelling: sulfide). When microorganisms live without oxygen, hydrogen sulphide is one of their by-products, a substance that is extremely toxic for most other lifeforms.
......
Eerie similarity to current fossil-fuel burning
While the Earth was considerably different 201 million years ago compared to today, the rates of CO2 release from volcanic rifts were not that different from what is occurring today as a result of the burning of fossil fuels.
Prof. Whiteside added: “The release of CO2 was probably at least as rapid as that caused by the burning of fossil fuels today, although the initial concentrations were much higher in the Triassic. The consequences of rapidly rising CO2 in ancient times inform us of the possible consequences of our own carbon dioxide crisis.”

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
It's funny how they twist everything to be a warning for global warming disasters.
They don't even attempt to explain how increased CO2 removes oxygen from the ocean. Since algal blooms actually use CO2 and produce oxygen, you would expect an increase in CO2 to increase oxygen production. The way that deserts are being made greener today, with higher CO2 rates. And no oxygen depletion has been detected, in spite of the fact that we are burning loads of oxygen with fossil fuels.
Oxygen depletion could have come from severe volcanic activity blocking out the sunlight, preventing the production of oxygen on land and at sea.
Not something MMGW is going to replicate.

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
I found it a rather unconvincing analog myself to be honest. What about the human factor going forwards - either making the situation a lot worse or a lot better?

I guess you're unaware that rates of oxygen dissolved in water are quite sensitive to temperature, and that warmer temps in the photic zone mean much less dissolved O2 (the shit that fish breathe) and also enhanced thermocline barriers which dramatically reduce upwelling and the chances to dissolve atmospheric O2 in cooler water?
Would it follow that you are also unaware that ocean algaes die and they don't decay on their own, and their decomposers often use more oxygen than the algae put in the water in the first place?

I guess that you haven't worked out that if less oxygen dissolves in the water, then there would be massively more in the air. More oxygen in the air means more will dissolve in the ocean.piscator wrote: I guess you're unaware that rates of oxygen dissolved in water are quite sensitive to temperature, and that warmer temps in the photic zone mean much less dissolved O2 (the shit that fish breathe) and also enhanced thermocline barriers which dramatically reduce upwelling and the chances to dissolve atmospheric O2 in cooler water?
You see, oxygen has to go somewhere. It can't disappear into thin air.
Well, that sounds like bollocks, but I'm happy to be corrected by links.piscator wrote: Would it follow that you are also unaware that ocean algaes die and they don't decay on their own, and their decomposers often use more oxygen than the algae put in the water in the first place?
Simple logic would say that, as ocean algae provide the vast bulk of the oxygen in the air that we breathe, there must be a surplus.
But I eagerly await your supporting evidence.Wikipedia wrote: According to some estimates, green algae and cyanobacteria in marine environments provide about 70% of the free oxygen produced on Earth and the rest is produced by terrestrial plants.[47]

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
Which came first: the oxygen, or the algae?
Do you think we can breed up some algae that will eat gravity and sunlight and shit elemental gold or platinum, maybe some that create hydrogen or uranium out of, like, other elements?
How is the ocean supposed to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere at the same rate when the surface interface is less efficient due to its warm water not being able to hold oxygen at nearly the same rate as the cooler water of the past?

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
In the most basic of science lesson, they should have told you about vapour pressure, and partial pressure. Look it up. Increase the concentration of oxygen in the atmosphere, and you increase it's partial pressure, making more dissolve in the liquid below.piscator wrote: How is the ocean supposed to absorb oxygen from the atmosphere at the same rate when the surface interface is less efficient due to its warm water not being able to hold oxygen at nearly the same rate as the cooler water of the past?
So if you increase the temperature of the liquid, more oxygen tries to escape. But increase the concentration of oxygen above, and more tries to dissolve. They work against each other.
If you have a small area of sea, then when it warms, yes, it will lose oxygen and not affect the concentration in the air because it's an OPEN system.
But if you are talking about the whole Earth, it's a CLOSED system. Look it up.
I'd also be interested in where it says that thermocline barriers can hold back ocean currents and prevent upwelling?
Is that actually a fact, or is it another of your own deductions? It might happen where ocean currents are nearly nil, but I find it unlikely otherwise. Because logically it would lead to a feedback, where lower currents produce more barriers, and more barriers produce lower currents.
But I'm happy to see your links.

Re: Global Climate Change Science News
Didn't I just tell you that warmer water can't dissolve oxygen as well as cooler water? There's a limit. Now you're off your algae theory and you're going to poo enough O2 to raise it's partial pressure in the atmosphere high enough to superconcentrate the oceans with oxygen?mistermack wrote:In the most basic of science lesson, they should have told you about vapour pressure, and partial pressure. Let us know how that all works out.

Those pesky scientists are lying again, this time about CO2 absorption. The conspiracy is bigger than I could ever have imagined...
