400mm lens, no surroundings. Sorry. It's not likely to be visible with a wide angle lens here. Too much crap in the air.

The sky is generous. We had northern lights here today. Only they lasted about a minute from when I noticed them. No chance to get a camera.

It's definitely not visible to the naked eye. I was using a long lens and aiming it at the part of the sky where people said it would be. After about 40 exposures, it showed up. You'll need at least some decent binoculars, Rum.
Thanks! Everyone seemed to be saying it was going to be at least a teensy bit spectacliar. Oh well.
They're saying even more about the one in November. After this showing, I'm pretty :what: about the next one.
It was easily visible in the southern hemisphere, apparently.

Edit:
I just looked it up. I think it must have been the Hale–Bopp Comet. I would have been ten. See this is the sort of thing I was expecting when this thread was started.

This is the one I saw when I was out in the wilderness, and totally not expecting it. This formed part of my comet rant over on my forum.

I'd probably have to move down there to get a decent picture. :sigh:

You've still got a few more weeks, but it's growing dimmer as it gets further from the sun. You'll need some pretty good optics.

I think I'll re-install my 1976 eyes. They were pretty good.
