It was -30c last night. Where's your global warming now?

Where it was the night, the week, the month, the year before.

Even neoliberals are starting to understand that this is going to cost them a shitload.
IMF chief Lagarde warns of “merciless” climate change

The planet is “perilously close” to a climate change tipping point, and requires urgent cooperation between countries, cities and business, International Monetary Fund chief Christine Lagarde has said.

Addressing an audience in London, Lagarde said reducing subsidies for fossil fuels and pricing carbon pollution should be priorities for governments around the world.

“Overcoming climate change is obviously a gigantic project with a multitude of moving parts. I would just like to mention one component of it—making sure that people pay for the damage they cause,” she said.

“We are subsidizing the very behaviour that is destroying our planet, and on an enormous scale. Both direct subsidies and the loss of tax revenue from fossil fuels ate up almost $2 trillion in 2011—this is about the same as the total GDP of countries like Italy or Russia.”

Describing the predicted consequences of climate change as “merciless”, Lagarde said leaders had to engage in what she called a “new multilateralism”, rekindling the “Bretton Woods spirit” which saw the creation of the IMF in 1945.

Surprise surprise. The Ice volume in the Arctic had increased by fifty percent in the last year.

In a statement issued on 5 February, the NSIDC said:

“Preliminary measurements from the CryoSat show that the volume of Arctic sea ice in autumn 2013 was about 50% higher than in the autumn of 2012. In October 2013, CryoSat measured approximately 9,000 cubic kilometers (approximately 2,200 cubic miles) of sea ice compared to 6,000 cubic kilometers (approximately 1,400 cubic miles) in October 2012.”

http://www.reportingclimatescience.com/ ... eased.html

This is mentioned in multiple sites, not just this one. It's the results coming from the latest technology, the European satellite ice-volume measurements, which have been providing accurate figures for the last three years.

So, in spite of all that bollocks about the oceans absorbing all that missing warming, the evidence shows the exact opposite. Or else, maybe someone can explain how oceans that are significantly warmer, can grow fifty percent more Arctic ice in one year, and be breaking all-time records for the extent of ANTARCTIC sea ice.

Imagine how cold it would be without global warming right now? :nono:

The 'pause' in global warming is not even a thing
All signs point to an acceleration of human-caused climate change. So why all this talk of a pause?

Global warming ‘pause’ due to unusual trade winds in Pacific ocean, study finds
The IPCC in 2013 pointed out that more than 90% of the world?s extra heat is being soaked up by the oceans, rather than lingering on the surface. Photograph: Universal History Archive/Getty Images

The idea that global warming has "paused" or is currently chillaxing in a comfy chair with the words "hiatus" written on it has been getting a good run in the media of late.

Much of this is down to a new study analysing why one single measure of climate change – the temperatures on the surface averaged out across the entire globe – might not have been rising quite so quickly as some thought they might.

But here's the thing.

There never was a "pause" in global warming or climate change. For practical purposes, the so-called "pause" in global warming is not even a thing.

The study in question was led by Professor Matt England at the University of New South Wales Climate Change Research Centre.

England's study found that climate models had not been geared to account for the current two decade-long period of strong trade winds in the Pacific.

Once the researchers added this missing windy ingredient to the climate models, the surface temperatures predicted by the models more closely matched the observations – that is, the actual temperature measurements that have been taken around the globe. England explains the study in this YouTube video.
Climate scientist Professor Matt England explains his study on the influence of Pacific trade winds on global temperatures

England told me:

Global warming has not stopped. People should understand that the planet is a closed system. As we increase our emissions of greenhouse gases, the fundamental thermal dynamics tells us we have added heat into the system. Once it's trapped, it can go to a myriad of places – land surface, oceans, ice shelves, ice sheets, glaciers for example.

England explained how the winds help the ocean to absorb heat into the thermocline – that's roughly the area between 100 metres and 300 metres deep. He says once the trade winds drop – which is likely to come within years rather than decades – then the averaged surface temperatures will rise sharply again.

Media outlets across the world have extensively covered England's paper. National Geographic told us the study revealed how the heat had been "hiding" in the oceans.

Over at the ABC, we were told the paper gave an explanation for "a pause in global warming" and that "over the past 15 years the rate of global warming has slowed - and more recently almost stalled."

On The Conversation, we had "Global warming stalled by strong winds driving heat into oceans".

Even though these reports spoke in detail about the complexity of the research (England feels the coverage generally has been very good), they could inadvertently cement the idea that global warming has in some way stopped, when it hasn't.

and just wait
Victorians may face even worse fire conditions next summer, with a new study estimating there is a 76 per cent chance of an El Nino weather pattern in the Pacific.
An El Nino typically sees rainfall shift east away from Australia and is linked to dryness and active fire seasons in the country's south-east.
Melbourne University fire ecologist Kevin Tolhurst said a likely El Nino, as suggested by a German study published in US journal the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, would increase the bushfire risk.

Yeah, it means a hot (in summer) dry year for us. If all the temperature records were broken this last year, then I expect them to tumble again in el nino conditions. And it also means, if I am still at the farm, this winter will be fucking freezing. :cold:

Wind is whistling a bit outside. Not that bad here, though. Wrong side of the island, or right dependant on how you see it?

Ennit amazing, all this stuff being the fault of global warming.
Wind, frost, ice, sunshine, drought, floods, none of this happened before 1950.

This global warming is causing havoc. There's only one bit of global warming we haven't had, in the last 17 years.

And that's a warmer globe.

You're starting to go like Macdoc, posting stuff from rabid bloggers, as if it's science.
I can read, but I don't read that shit. There are millions of alarmist bloggers.

What I do read, is the stuff that I linked to. That arctic sea ice grew by fifty percent last year.
If your head wasn't so full of alarmist blog-shite, you might have absorbed that fact.

Or are you just closing your eyes, and sticking your fingers in your ears, and going la la la ?

Umm, it DIRECTLY QUOTES THE SCIENTIST INVOLVED. And it's not a blog, it's a reputable news organisation. It explains EVERYTHING you think is fact. Get your head out of the sand.
