Arctic ice melt could trigger uncontrollable climate change at global level

Arctic scientists have warned that the increasingly rapid melting of the ice cap risks triggering 19 “tipping points” in the region that could have catastrophic consequences around the globe.

The Arctic Resilience Report found that the effects of Arctic warming could be felt as far away as the Indian Ocean, in a stark warning that changes in the region could cause uncontrollable climate change at a global level.

Temperatures in the Arctic are currently about 20C above what would be expected for the time of year, which scientists describe as “off the charts”. Sea ice is at the lowest extent ever recorded for the time of year.

“The warning signals are getting louder,” said Marcus Carson of the Stockholm Environment Institute and one of the lead authors of the report. “[These developments] also make the potential for triggering [tipping points] and feedback loops much larger.”

And the ice extent was more during Maunder minimum, of course. According to the earth orbit calculations we are headed towards an ice age, that should be here in 10000 or 20000 years, so it's slow cooling. Unfortunately we are actually experiencing warming due to greenhouse gases in the atmosphere, and until that is dealt with in about 2000 years when the cooling takes over due to earth's orbital variation, we'll have a fun time.

Arctic ice is disappearing quicker than it should if it were natural. Of course it fluctuates, but the cycles are 100000, 40000 and 26000 years, not as quick as what we are seeing now. Some plants and animals will not be able to adapt as fast as necessary, especially because of the exceptionally rapid rate of change, and will go extinct. That could be us. But I don't give a fuck about that, although it would be interesting to see if intelligent life will eventually emerge on earth. We had our chance and blew it. Back to walking on all fours and eventual existence as green pond scum. Then, as before, an alien space ship will come by, and a harassed parent will toss a shitty diaper out the airlock. That will orbit the earth for a while, and then land in the green pond scum. And in four billion years we'll have another go at it.
