Capture conscious on a microchip.

I was just watching a prog on iPlayer, called Vision of the Future. Presented by Prof Michio Kaku.

At one part the show was looking at a case where a woman who suffered from depression, had a wire implated into her brain to connect the electrode thingies. A pace maker was also fitted, and the scientists had to make adjustments to set her emotions. It was amazing to see them tweeking a machine to make her cry and then make her smile!

A little further into the program, they implanted a memory chip into the brain of a rat to capture the memories. This, implanted into a human brain is to help people with their memories after the brain has been damaged.

Anyway, this got me wondering. Could it one day lead to our entire conscious being captured onto a microchip and being transfered to a computer after we die, meaning we live on (in a computer or robot) after the body is dead?

I'd be like that girl on "Poltergeist", and scare the shit out of the kids when they switch the TV on.

I hate it that we're so easily controlled though by many different means including things like these electro thingies.

I want to be in control of my emotions, my thoughts, my desires, not my body.

One of the main things I've always had trouble getting my head around is consciousness.. and, experiencing life in the moment - or something.

I think of it like this:

Imagine a Star Trek style transporter (please no complaints from trekkies if this is wrong, it's only an example). It rips you apart atom by atom and then rebuilds an exact copy of you somewhere else. The copy of you is not aware that anything has changed (other than their location) as long as all the electrical impulses in the brain where also copied exactly. - But surely the original you experiences death doesn't it?

How could the sense of self be transferred from one to the other? Unless it is just an illusion and our consciousness is just created in the moment by the matter that we are made of. - But then that means that we experience the death of our past selves with every moment that passes, and we just don't notice it.

I don't know. It confuses me. And I don't like being confused.

That is all we are. We have a blue print and the parts are replaced where possible, as needed.

I've always stayed away from most drugs for precisely that reason. My mind is unstable enough as it is!

Is it possible for a mind to truly comprehend it's own existence? Or would that be like trying to open a crate with the crowbar that's inside it? Maybe the whole universe is just a mind trying to understand itself.

Maybe that's enough philosophy for me today. My head feels like a drawer full of tangled cables in the dark.
