The same volcano erupted for about two years in the 19th century. That would be quite interesting. I wonder what other means of transport would be invented out of necessity...

Well, there's an idea in my head at the moment, kinda buzzing around.

I might be able to make an engine that's powered by steam. Maybe if we could put this engine onto a horse drawn carriage, and then have it run along a specially designed road. Long iron girders mayhaps?
I could build lots of them and we'd need operators to operate them. We need some people to train..... :ask: Now that's given me an idea what to call it.
The operated machine! 8-)

What do you guys think? I'm off to start drawing up some plans.

I'm not sure either idea will solve the trans-Atlantic quandary ... not without some long bridges or tunnels, anyway.

The public transport in this country is in desperate need of an upgrade anyway. The technology already exists - Maglev trains are so much more efficient than aircraft and could potentially reach similar speeds. The question is - would any government invest in such a large scale infrastructure change?

With the trans-Atlantic problem, bridges and tunnels are an option but again - massive initial investment.
[Disclaimer - if this is comes across like I think I know what I'm talking about, I want to make it clear that I don't. I'm just trying to get my thoughts down]

Now there's an idea ... not a new one mind you:

On that train all graphite and glitter
Undersea by rail
Ninety minutes from New York to Paris
Well by seventy-six well be a.o.k. ...
