I was a software developer in the DOS days. I just found the windows environment a happy one to work in. In the beginning though you had to write your own printer drivers. There was just not the third party stuff around and if it was it was never fully tested.

In my day a printer driver was the bloke who took your copy to the lithographer.

Nice. Printer drivers drove me potty. Luckily at the time only HP was the only widely used laser printer and it was all black and white standard reports but were not standard in length which was the biggest problem; calculating the length of the report. What you saw as a page was not what the printer saw. Pure madness.
