You're confusing a carrot patch with the entire planet. I can see how you could get muddled.

A carrot patch can easily be cleared, and be re-colonised from the parsnip plot. It can be compared to the swede section. If you clear it, you don't lose any genetic information. Nothing goes extinct.

It's subtly different to a mass extinction on a planet. You need to think about it a bit, but I hope this helps.
