Dallas Zoo shock as lion kills lioness in front of visitors

Officials at a zoo in the US state of Texas are investigating why a male lion attacked and killed a lioness in full view of visitors.

The male seized five-year-old Johari by the neck on Sunday at the Dallas Zoo - an autopsy found she died from neck wounds and haemorrhaging.

Zoo officials said the lions had lived together peacefully for years.

They said they had no idea why the male had turned on Johari, but that they have no plans to euthanize him.

Video taken by a zoo visitor showed the apparently calm male lion with its jaws clamped around the female's neck.

"Everyone thought they were playing at first but then they could see that she was struggling," witness Jim Harvey told local news station WFAA.

'Very rare occurrence'
Security personnel closed the exhibit to the public and the male was removed.

The remaining four lions appeared unaffected by the incident, said officials.

"Johari was a remarkable animal, as are all of our lions" said Lynn Kramer, vice-president of animal operations and welfare at the zoo, in a statement.

"This is a very rare and unfortunate occurrence. In my 35 years as a veterinarian in zoos, I've never seen this happen."

The statement said Johari, known as Jo-Jo, was a staff favourite who was "sweet and loving with her sisters, and often could be found grooming them".

Mr Kramer told WFAA that male lions do sometimes kill other males in the wild, and sometimes cubs, but that attacking a female was extremely rare.

(continued, past sell by date and acting as a gatekeeper to prettier younger stock....lion king had had enough. In the wild he could have lost the ball and chain in a mock fight?) :read:

I hope they find out why it did that in full view of the visitors. You would have expected it to wait til is wasn't in full view of visitors.

No, that probably has nothing to do with it. Lions don't think like we do - to put it mildly.

However, there may be a connection, in that, all those people can stress some animals out.

Yeah put any animals in prison and they tend to go a tad daft.

That's the first thing I thought :hehe:

I mean, not that the lion getting killed is funny. Just the awkward wording there.
People think "queue" is just "q" followed by 4 silent letters.

But those letters are not silent.

They're just waiting their turn.

Don't underestimate animals:
Penguin droppings hit panda queue at Edinburgh Zoo

People queuing to see the panda enclosure at Edinburgh Zoo are being hit by penguin droppings as the curious birds have been watching proceedings.

Rockhopper penguins have been standing along the edge of their enclosure since the pandas arrived earlier this month.

The penguins are higher than the panda enclosure due to the site being on Corstorphine Hill.

Now officials are planning to build a glass panel in a bid to stop people being hit by the guano.

Gary Wilson, Edinburgh Zoo's director of business operations, said: "Our rockhopper penguins in particular have been watching the events at the panda enclosure below with great interest, ever since work started on the enclosure.

"Extremely curious birds, they often gather next to the wall to see what's happening below.

"We're hoping it's not a case of monochrome jealousy, but one or two of our rockhoppers seem to have had surprisingly good aim.

Why the "shock"? What were they, insulated city slickers who've never been to the wild and thought meat grew in a factory?

I think the shock is the Lion v. Lioness part. Adult male will readily kill the offspring of other males, but this is completely different, and largely unknown.

Maybe he found out she was sleeping with another lion :dunno:

I could be wrong, but there might only be one adult male in the zoo, to avoid the infanticide I mentioned.

And I know you were joking. :smug:

I'm surprised that it doesn't happen more often. I do remember a tigress killing her mate in a zoo in Mexico (I think).

Wild lions kill all the time. It's something that they're used to, so they understand to associate the biting of the neck with killing prey. A lion in the zoo has probably never killed anything, so it doesn't have the same understanding as a wild lion.
It probably started as something more harmless, and the killer instinct took over. I wouldn't be surprised if he did it again.

So what? Get another. They're not rare in zoos.

It was El Paso Zoo in Texas where the tigress killed her mate.

Maybe it's something in the water in Texas. They do like shooting people, and executing them.
