Electrons found on Mars - therefore Life

In addition to sulphur, nitrogen, hydrogen, oxygen, phosphorus and carbon - some of the key chemical elements for life - it found compounds in a range of oxidised states, meaning there were electrons moving through the environment. Those could have been co-opted as an energy source by simple life-forms, if they ever existed in Gale.
Just goes to show the money was well spent.

I could have told them they would find electrons there.

Not just any electrons but rather red electrons. And that can only mean one thing. Communism. :pop:

Reduce their cities to rubble. Not a single martian must remain alive.

I keep my electrons in the bank in the safe deposit box. Takes less space than gold.

I tried protons and neutrons, but they were slippery and suicidal. Escaped the zip loc bag.

As in nature...

The laws of physics do not permit marriage between two electrons, and when an electron and a positron unite, they mutually annihilate. However, nothing is lost in the process. Read into that what you will, because I can't make heads nor tails of it.

I take that to mean that the particles disappear in a huge burst of energy, which equals the mass of the two original particles times C squared. ( As in E = mc2 )

Not really a huge amount of energy.

The most usual outcome is the production of two gamma ray photons travelling in opposite directions, each of an energy equivalent to the rest mass of an electron (or a positron - the two have equal mass) - 511keV. This places them in the "hard X-ray" section of the EM spectrum. However, it is also possible (although with a far lower probability) for three, four, or even more photons to be produced, or for a neutrino/anti-neutrino pair to be created simultaneously. However, whichever outcome occurs, the net mass/energy of the system is preserved.

When the particles are in relative motion, their kinetic energy must be added to the total mass/energy equation and more exotic particles can be created by their collision, such as W+/- and Z bosons - it is hoped that Higgs Bosons can be created using super-accelerated electrons colliding with positrons.
