Newbies

Post by M » Mon Jan 17, 2011 4:24 pm

Just played in my first ever mafia game and wanted to share my thoughts.

I joined in out of curiosity. I had absolutely no idea what it was all about and whe I say "no idea" I think I should expand.

The nearest I have come to this kind of 'game' are murder mystery parties at people's houses. I didn't know there would be teams. I didn't know roles would evolve. I had no understanding of terms used - scum, town, vanilla, ping, etc. Having offered to play, it soon became clear that bailing wasn't an option as it would effect the whole game, so I had to look through the rules thread and make notes  , look at previous games and just try to pick it up as I went along. Then I was faced with Nightfall  !
I never did anything over-night.... I had no idea what to do! I'm still not sure who you are and aren't allowed to communicate with off the playing board. Also, it's difficult to know what role to pick when you are offered, having no experience of what any of them might entail.

Irre was a great, friendly mentor, but I didn't even know what questions to ask. It's a bit like playing a board game in a foreign language. :hehe:

So I have been thinking about the recruitment of new players. How about offering a buddy-up system, allowing a newbie to tag along with an experienced player? They could exchange pms about what is going on and why. Then when they feel ready, they could play in their own right.

Anyhow, thanks for having me and sorry if I cocked it up.

first game is just confusing ..I think because it's almost impossible to explain how the game works .You didn't mess anything up at all . Having a role in your first game esp with strange roles like in that game must be daunting for a new player ,but there is no way to fix that .

It's hard for mentors too ,because if they tell you what to do or say then they are just playing through you .
if you read the scum thread You will maybe have more ides what was going on .

You had one of the hardest roles in a very hard game (12 people and lots of special roles). You played like were an old hand (and that had nothing to do with anything I offered in the way of info), so you did really well.

I like your idea of a buddy system and think that's a great way to go. perhaps next game you can be a fly on the wall for the scum team!

Thanks but I would have been totally lost if you weren't there. I remember thinking "OMG what have I got myself into".

I knew you were her mentor when she posted that I was suspicious. :hehe:

The world is a thing of utter inordinate complexity and richness and strangeness that is absolutely awesome. I mean the idea that such complexity can arise not only out of such simplicity, but probably absolutely out of nothing, is the most fabulous extraordinary idea. And once you get some kind of inkling of how that might have happened, it's just wonderful. And . . . the opportunity to spend 70 or 80 years of your life in such a universe is time well spent as far as I am concerned.

Honestly, honestly, it wasn't that! I was kind of going for you because we've known one another for quite some time and I thought if we got some dialogue going I might get more of an idea what was going on. Guess that didn't work then!

OK, I got the right mentor for the wrong reason. I wasn't involved too much in this game, the timing worked out badly for me, next time I'll be more active.

Just reread day two and saw all the posts about me being suss by you and Nellie, the only person more scummy than me is Feck, always good to remember.

And Azatoth when he's playing instead of GMing.

And higgs, and Jynx, and MZ, and Irre, and especially Oblivion.

And Charlou is devious as scum too.

Actually, trust no one except me.
